well i discovered today that running a tyre air compressor off one of the rear door cigarette sockets is not a good thing to do!

it ran for about 20 seconds, then cut out - checked rear ciggy fuse and yep, it was blown.

the standard fuse is 15amp and only used for the two rear cigarette sockets - can i replace it with say a 25amp fuse which will take the draw of my compressor without a problem?

slightly worried the wiring might only be rated for 20 or 25 amps...... in which case i'll be able to blow my tyres up in exchange for setting fire to the car!

I wouldn't risk it the fuses are rated for a reason, Better no compressor than a burnt out shell. Or trying to trace a burnt wire.

Exactly, don't ever risk electrickery.

What compressor you using to blow the fuse, i have one of these in my garage and it's faultless on both the cars i have.

I agree, not worth the risk, the wiring in an LS is ridiculously complicated.

Take the ciggy plug off and fit crocodile clips.

Include an in-line fuse, then clip direct to Battery to operate.

That's what I did when I bought a compressor that was too powerful to run off the cigar lighter.

As mentioned never over rate a fuse be it in a car or domestic. The croc clips is a good idea, normally the plug that goes into the cigar lighter socker has a screw off bit at the tip end and the thing will come to pieces.Inside there should be a fuse, check the value and use the same in an inline fuse with the croc clips.

The maximum wattage for a 15A fuse at 12 Volts is 180 Watts so I am a little surprised your compressor uses more than this for a small motor.

Hi

Is your compressor OK and been used before? You could use some crock clips on your batter to test it. If it is tight or siezed it will probably draw too much current on start up (and blow the fuse) so if it does not run straight away when you test it on a Battery disconnect it immediately. Also fuses do blow occasionally - did you replace the fuse and give it another try?

My air pump draws 10 amps so I doubt you need more than 15. Don't put an over rated fuse in under any circumstances. Your air pump will have a duty cycle rating - it will be with the instructions and will be something like run for 10 mins then let it stand for 10 mins to cool off. If you don't let it cool you may cause it to sieze which will probably cause your blown fuse. They usually have a 10 min duty cycle so they can be made small and not have cooing fans etc.
