Howdy folks !

New to the forum as I've recenlty purchased a GS 300 SEL (2005).

I wanted to get your thoughts regarding the extended warranty option (£1,950 for 2 years) as I'm concerned about the quantum of bills that can rack up in case something goes wrong. The car has 75k miles on it and is 05 reg so I only have till May 13 to whack the warranty on before the car get older than 7 years.

Is this something you would recommend? Lexus are known to be bullet proof but I'm not sure if it applies to the GS.

Lexus has also recently introduced another warranty service for older cars (between 5 to 10 years) which excludes anything related to the Navagation console and has a limit of £2,000 (not sure if thats per claim or per year). The cost is £500 per year. Would that be a better option?

Any thoughts/opinions welcome.

Cheers

Cheers Chris.

I've noticed an issue with the brakes (the steering wheel tends to wobble when I brake and the quality of the brakes seem pretty poor) and have booked the car in for a check up and intermediate service. I'm hoping this is not a major issue and won't cost an arm and a leg (hence why I wanted to get some comfort regarding the extended warranty).

I don’t know much about warranties, I have never taken one out, but I have herd people talking about them. Make sure if you do take one out you know exactly what is, and what is not covered, for example you mention about your steering wobble, I very much doubt a warranty would cover discs and pads as these would come under wear and tear, if lets say it’s the steering rack then that would probably be covered, but I expect you will end out having to pay out for other parts that are not and that’s were they extract more money out of you and why you don’t hear of many if any warranty companies going bust.

Quentin Willson owns a car warranty company and I spent some time talking to him about car warranties, he was guest speaker at my local Lexus dealership last June at the launch of the new GS, he told me that out of all the clams made in a year only 1% were from Lexus owners, not something you would expect someone to admit if they are after new customers.

Perhaps have a look at his company if your seriously considering a warranty, he did tell me that his cover was just as comprehensive as a Lexus one, and probably a lot cheaper.

Hope your car turns out ok and it doesn’t cost you too much.

I'm with wendle on this. If you had the diesel or a hybrid, I'd say consider it, but with the petrol auto you have to think that if something major was gonna go you'd probably know well in advance.

The wobble sounds like warped discs which are unlikely to be covered under warranty.
