Hiya folks

Just been looking at the new tyre rating system for tyres to fit my 53 Ls430, 225/55/R17

Look at this page

http://www.blackcirc...er/tyres/search

On the left side click the Pirelli box, the list is pre-selected for delivery only. Also check the speed rating to any.

The thing to look at is the tyre Pirelli P7 Cinturato, it shows 3 of them, now compare the ratings for them all, how can the same tyre be differently priced and have different ratings.

The one marked for BMW RF 225/55/17 (97) Y is £189.44

The one marked for Audi 225/55/17 (97) Y is £153.16

The efficiency, wet grip and noise ratings are also different, E-B-71 for the BMW and C-B-71 for the Audi.

They are exactly the same tyre, so how come the defference. Am i missing something.

Is this another scheme that is flawed you think.

Hiya Chris,

The difference is that one is marked RF, which means run flat, and is a tyre that has a poorer fuel efficiency presumably because the walls are so rigid.

If you want this particular tyre, there is no choice for you really as you should only use runflats when your wheels monitor the pressure in the tyre, and 'bong' you when the pressure in one goes down so you know you've got to drive below the maximum 'flat' speed. You therefore get the better performance and the cheaper tyre!

To answer your question, I do think that there is one thing missing from the ratings, and that's a wear rating, to indicate how many miles each tyre will cover. Good grip comes about mainly through using softer rubber, which increases fuel consumption and reduces tyre life. In the US, tyres are marked with a wear rating.

: o )

PS the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx RT looks a bit better?

The whole new tyre rating system is apparently neither use nor ornament.

Tyre manufacturer's issue their own ratings for their tyres and some low end budget tyres appear from the tests to be better than premium brands.

Add to the fact there is absolutely no monitoring or regulation of the system in place and it turns out to be another expensive EU interference move.
