Newbie Help....management Lamp On Is200 54 Plate

Help !...just bought two lexus is200s for me and her indoors...A 53 plate and a 54 plate....the 54 has done approx 40 miles since i bought it private...the MANAGEMENT LAMP has come on but the car still drives fine...i have mechanical experience but virgin to owning the excellent Lexus brand..Whats the most common faults for the lamp to come on...is it possible to get the m.i.l code manually or do i need a OBD+11 diagnostic kit to get the fault code...is it possible to disconnect the Battery to reset the M.I.L light ?...whats the most common faults for the M.I.L on...am guessing a faulty Lamda sensor reading the forums....any help greatly appreciated..am based in Scotland...cheers
