I have had the Lexus up un ramps today to look at fitting the towbar I have.

I noticed that both rear silencers have a rust hole in exactly the same place half way down on the inside edge just under the seam. They are fairly deep but not blowing but I don't think they will last much longer.

Is this a common issue it is strange they have both gone in the same spot. The rest of the silencers are spotless.

I didn't fit the tow bar in the end as while I have the silencers off to fit it I will get some plates welded over the holes.

Either that or a custom stainless system for the rear as I can't see the replacement being cheap from Lexus

I didn't spot any problems with my exhausts when I fitted my towbar 3 years ago. The silencers are stainless steel and if they are not blowing I would not touch them until they do start to blow, if ever.

You don't need to remove the exhaust to fit the towbar, disconnect the rubber loops at the rear and the rubber blocks in front of the rear silencers and it will hang down enough to get the towbar in place.

Thanks John

Are you sure the boxes are stainless I wouldn't have thought they would have rusted if they were the holes are quite deep.

I removed the rubbers from one side and the silencer didn't come down far enough I will take them off both sides and see if that makes a difference the heat sheild fastenings are corroded so it will be fun getting them off

According to the LS430 Spec Sheet posted at the start of this forum they are stainless.

Has any body else ever had to repair or replace an exhaust?

Yes the heat shield fastenings will be corroded, but a good soak in penetrating oil should free them.

I had to replace both rear boxes on mine because they were rusted through and blowing. I put a new stainless steel system on from the cat backwards. Great job, looks and sounds nice - quiet when tooling along but growly when I put my foot down!

It cost around the £300 mark, can't remember exactly but it was done by these guys - http://www.mijperformance.com/.

Great job as I said and really nice guys. I don't have a youtube recording but might try to get one done. It only growls when you open her wide and let her go but she sounds glorious then!!
