1999 Gs300 Brake Booster Accumulator Replacement

Hello all,

Long time listener, 1st time caller.

Anyway, this weekend I have to replace the Brake Booster Accumulator on my nanny's 1999 GS300. I say my nanny, he's not my nanny, I'm 32, wouldn't that be silly if I still had a nanny. Anyway, I'm replacing it for what I would imagine would be obvious reasons by now to most of you, what I'd like from you is some tips on the best way to tackle this job!

Here is an exploded diagram of what I'm actually replacing, the part number is 47950D

Be VERY careful when removing the accumulator there is around 2000PSI in them!

Make sure the ignition is off and keys out, then depress the brake pedal 30-40 times to exaust the gas.

People have made a special tool that fits over the top and the 2 flat sections to remove the accumulator but you can use either a chain or strap type oil filter remover to help loosen it off.

If you are unsure get a profesional to do it, the last thing you want is a 4KG high velocity missile exiting the car!

If you have a rebuilt one it should be a straight forward job and the pump will run until the system has repressurised.

There is one guy in the UK that actually rebuilds these devices for around £120.00 but this includes new internal seals and refilling.

Well, I've done it. I don't know if it was harder or easier than I thought it would be.

For anyone tackling this job who's not pretty competent, don't, it's quite involved, fiddly and time consuming.

Oh, and remember to wash your hands before getting in the car to remove the bulkhead bolts too.

Next on the list is changing the PS fluid as the steering is heavy and won't straighten up when moving and turning the steering wheel.

My 1998 GS300 makes unusual noises from around that area which I would describe as almost like the air brakes on a lorry when the pressure is released, or like the noise of servo brakes. It appears as though a tank is filling up with air and then it switching off. The brakes do not appear to be affected.

Any ideas and the rebuild man's details would be appreciated.
