Anybody else experienced a hard brake pedal when starting the car from cold - returns to normal as soon as the engine starts - never happened on my mark 3? - only happened since the wether turned cold

Never heard of it before, there is always stored vacuum in the brake servo so I guess because its cold now the volume of reserves could be less. The same thing happens if you repeatedly press the brake pedal without the engine running,as the reserve is used up the pedal becomes firmer then if you put your foot on the brake pedal then start the car it will drop slightly as the vacuum builds up.

It may be worth just having a look at the brake servo to intake vacuum pipe to make sure it is OK, there is also a one way valve in line with it to prevent vacuum loss but if the brakes are behaving normally one the engine is running and there are no warning lights on I wouldn't worry unduly.
