Problem? When Changing Discs And Pads

hi all,

was in the process of changing my discs and pads when i got to the front passenger side and removed wheel, removed caliper from carrier and found the rubber seals were a different shape to the drivers side. so i did what all good engineers do and i proded one of the seals with my finger and for my trouble i got a face full of brake fluid!

needless to say i went and rinsed my eyes and returned to the job!

ive since drained both seals of fluid and the caliper seems to be functioning properly no pulling under braking, no loss of pedal feel etc.

any ideas what the problem is/was?

have a look at the picture below, seal on the left is part drain seal on right is full.

I'm certainly no expert on this but I thought the rubber was just to prevent dust etc from getting inside, which would suggest a leaking caliper?

That looks like your piston seal has leaked and inflated the boot. Impressive.

I'd strip the caliper and take a look to make sure your piston seal hasn't split.

agree with both above, the actuall piston seal has gone and the boot is taking the strain. I wouldn't leave it like that, it should be repaired or replaced asap.
