I seem to have what looks like grey overspray on one of the rear door armrests of my car. I'm hoping this isn't an indication that repair work has been carried out. Does anyone know Lexus Velvet Black's undercoat colour please?

Doesn't really matter if it is paint overspray or not, it shouldn't be there and that IS stated in the warranty. I am beginning to think that you should reject the car. If the dealer can't source another car through the Lexus network you could try rejecting it under the Sale of Goods Act. As I said before, "Lexus management car" actually means Lexus demo/loan car. Did you not notice the grey when you inspected the car? You need to go around the car with a fine toothcomb looking for anything else wrong.

If you have another Lexus dealer nearby you could take it in for a free visual checkover or even see what they say about the car if you said you were looking to sell.......amazing the faults they can find when they are looking at a trade-in.

Hi Dave1,

No, I didn't notice the overspray initially. It's a few spots on the electric window switch panel. I can't see anything else wrong, apart from a couple of very small indentations in the pocket on the back of the drivers seat.

Sale of Goods Act not withstanding, I've been speaking to Trading Standards today, and they asked if I had been given a notice of my right to cancel the contract at the time I agreed to purchase. I wasn't, in fact the salesman had forgotten all his paperwork, and merely scribbled figures on a piece of scrap paper. I didn't get any paperwork until the day of delivery - last Thursday, and even now I haven't had the notice to terminate the contract. Trading Standards said that the dealer had committed a criminal offence by not making me aware of my rights in writing, and that I had a right to cancel the contract. Apparently the 7 day cancellation period only starts from the day you receive this document, and as I still haven't had it, they appear to be on distinctly dodgy ground. Neither did I receive a document with an illustration of the car that customers can note any defects on. So, as far as I am concerned, I signed no confirmation to say I was satisfied with the car, or had inspected it. The only documents I was asked to sign were the GAP Insurance waiver, and the form confirming the details of my part exchange vehicle. I'm having the car looked at by my local Lexus servcice centre and bodyshop. If there are any indications that it has been accident repaired, or there are other problems I am unaware of, I will be rejecting it. I have e-mailed the salesman, sales manager and dealer principal, but none of them have yet responded. As they are likely to be busy with new reg cars, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for a day or two. Incidentally, Trading Standards said the terms and conditions of the 30 Day Exchange were unfair, and that a customer should not be expected to have to chose a replacement car from the same dealership if it mean't choosing something totally different. If nothing suitable was available, a court would expect them to source an identically specced replacement, or return the cash & P/exchange, or the value of the P/exchange if it has already been sold. Good to know, and I certainly wouldn't have got as far as this if I hadn't had the help of the kind people on this forum. You have certainly been a lot more helpful than Lexus Customer Relations, who are frankly useless. Regards Lee

You are more patient than I am.....I would expect a VERY prompt reply from the dealer principal, let alone the salesman and manager. You should be every bit as important as the guy spending £25k on a new IS. If you check out Lexus.co.uk and click onto Used Approved Cars then search for GS450h it throws up several around the £36k mark, 10 reg and 60 reg with similar or lower mileage to yours. Lexus Hull, Lexus Cheltenham, Lexus Leicester, Lexus Derby among others. Put in your postcode. I am pretty sure they can get another if they are pushed.

Yes, I think the way I worded my e-mails told them what I expect from them if the dent is not repairable, and an inspection reveals other problems. They may well be waiting until I make contact with them afterwards. Still, would have been nice to have at least got an acknowledgement!! Thanks, I'll take a look at the other cars available around the country. Prices seem to vary enormously, and I've seen higher mileage cars going for considerably more money than identically specced lower mileage vehicles at the same dealer. Guess they are priced according to what an individual vehicle owes them. I have also found that cars in the South seem to go for more than those further North. Think I paid top money for this one, considering its a late registered pre-facelift model. Then again, I chose that deliberately because I'm not keen on the new front grille or rear lights. Still, I'd sooner live with those than a large dent in my door!!

I just hope you get a satisfactory outcome to this. It isn't the sort of thing to encourage either brand loyalty or dealer loyalty.

Thanks, I don't intend to let it drop. I won't let it spoil my enjoyment of the car (once sorted), and I won't change my opinion of the brand based on two salesmen who probably learnt their customer service skills from Arthur Daley!! As far as I can see there is only 1 car currently available that matches the spec and colour combination, and thats at Lexus Leeds. £2k cheaper too, so I could get money back!!
