Probably not as they are probably different size.

Best bet is to replace the existing head unit with a single din fascia adapter and then get a single din head unit with dvd screen etc with Sat Nav.

This is what I plan to do with mine sometime this year.

PM Tigerfish as he is the electronics guru on here and has done this on a Mk1 car.

Yeah, it is not a straight forward swap changing the standard head unit in a mk2 to a sat nav unit from a mk2, so impossible pretty much to stick one in the mk1. The satnav unit also has the heater controls built in I think, which makes it even harder.

would the 97 ls400 satnav work?

I wouldn't expect it to be any easier. If you already have all the gear, then might be worth a go, but probably not worth buying to try it.
