Car Swaying At High Speeds

hi all,

i was driving on the motorway today and noticed something very concerning. as i was driving at motorway speed, i noticed the rear of the car swaying, which meant i had to constantly compensate with the steering, and its quite stressful too. i know my tyres at the rear, are worn, and im getting them changed next week, but i was wondering if there was more to it. the motorway was dry today, but obviously worried if it rained, which it didn't. any ideas what it could be, or is it simply the rear tyres?

It's not the tyres, worn tyres on a dry road grip very well. Still glad you're not keeping them worn!

They may grip well but don't add anything to stability! Check your pressure for a start. ;)

i forgot to add that prior to my journey i did pump up tyres to recommended spec

Hi m8 it could be the tyres , i had my back ones changed a while a back and on the journey back the back end was doing exactly the same as you described.

They seemed to bed in after a while but at the time it wasn't fun to drive on the motorway.

If you have the sport wheels (275/35/18) on rear it can do this sometimes if you get them into any of the depressions caused by lorries and coaches in lanes 1 and 2. Otherwise worn tyres CAN cause the car to lose rear end stability at times, even on motorways, but I would think it is probably your front end drifting about slightly and the rear following.

thanks for all your responses. i thought i'd update you all:

i changed the rear tyres which i was intending to do anyway (275/35/18's), got them balanced, and balanced the front tyres too. this seems to have cured the problem. the rear tyres make such a big difference its unreal. i think it was a combination of rear unbalanced tyres. anyway problems solved!
