Removing Oil

Unfortuantly.. I have suddenly aquired a patch of oil on my driveway....

(don't ask how)

Does anyone know of a way to remove this, cause it's annoying me

I'm glad you've asked this question.

The problem is that to remove oil from a driveway you need something that, well, removes oil. Tar (assuming you have a tar driveway) has an oily component. Consequently, anything that will attack the oil will remove the driveway too!

Interested to see everyone elses comments. My brother's just moved out, so now my parents want to tidy up the drive: he'd dumped oil on it millions of times with his 2l turbo rover!!

I've got a similar problem with tyre shine marks! I've tried the jet wash and that doesn't shift them (looks fine when they are wet but as soon as it dries they are back). I haven't tried anything else yet.

Halfords brake cleaner aerosol and scrub with old tooth or nail brush.

Pour on a pile of washing powder ( you know that stuff they sold in the 90's ) and just leave it. Make sure it is covered so it doesn't wash off. leave it a couple of days dampen a little and scrub with a hard broom.

If it's still wet & not soaked in cat litter works well :)

I had the same problem on my drive. It's concrete and the oil had absorbed into it.

The only way I could get rid was with caustic soda left on for a couple of hours and then jetwashed off. (Make sure you wash away the caustic soda with a couple of buckets of water first so you don't spray caustic soda over everywhere!)

I don't know what affect caustic soda has on tarmac though.

Hmmm, that gives me an idea ...

Go for a wander round the local neighbourhood armed with a bottle of oil ...

When you find a house with a hugely posh car in the drive ....

Pour a bit of oil on the ground underneath the posh car

Then i s'pose park nearby in your 'emergency motor mechanic' liveried vehicle ...

and wait for the business to roll in :D

Then leave as the 'rogue traders' tv crew approach ....

BTW... with the absence of costic soda.. the best result I've got is by covering it with neat bleach, and hosing off 10 mins later...

It doesn't do the driveway any good though...
