Import / Customs Duty

any clues on what import /customs duty is on importing from japan

how is it based and what sort of money are they after

i presume it will be the same for usa

Here we go....

It doesn't matter where the product is coming from, it is from outside the EU, then you have to pay VAT on importing it.

Now in the UK, VAT is 17.5%, but sometimes the import tax can fluxuate depending on the product, cost of product etc..

Your best bet is to give customs a call, tell them what your thinking of importing & price etc... they should be able to give you an idea of import price.

The National Advice Service is available from Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm, and will be able to answer any general queries you may have on:

Taxes and duties, including Value Added Tax (VAT), Excise, Customs, Insurance Premium Tax, Landfill Tax, Aggregates Tax, Air Passenger Duty, Climate Change Levy, Mineral Oils Rebated Oils and Money Service Businesses.

Rates of duty or tax chargeable on particular goods.

Requests for publications, e.g. forms or notices.

Requests for duplicate VAT returns.

BTW, you don't have to be VAT registered for customs, they will set up a temporary number for the import.
