Cam Belt

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Is it really necessary to change the waterpump as well with the cambelt? The water pump doesn't run off the cambelt so I think I can change it later by my self. Is it hard to change it? I would like to change the radiator hose as well as the bypass hose along with the other 3 belts (power steering, alternator and fan belt) but I don't have the extra money now so I was thinking to do this later.

Is that ok?

What you guys know?

I don't think it's necessary, just that people do it while everything's off. I don't think my waterpump was changed when they did my cambelt............

It needs changing mate, even if it's not broken. In most cases where the waterpump runs off the cambelt(timing belt) it's really good to change it. In this case to waterpump is not driven by the timing belt so I was just wondering if it can be done at a later date without removing the cambelt.

NOT NECCESSARY TO CHANGE

MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE TENSIONER BELT THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT

I would say, not so necessary. If ran of the cam belt then fair enough, as a new belt will put a bit more strain on the pump as its not as "slack" but ok to leave it or as you say, leave it til another day if you really want to do it.

So, you guys are saying that I CAN change the water pump at a later date without necessary taking the timing belt off, is that correct. I know it doesn't need changing, but if I want to I can change it later my self, without taking the camblet off(which would be my main concern). Basically I want to change the water pump with the other 3 belts as well as radiator hoses (upgrade to silicone) and a new cooler later on down the track.

Most people change the waterpump when the cambelt is being changed to save future labour costs- the waterpump is not expensive (about 100GBP for a OEM Lexus/Toyota one or a pattern part can be bought for half the price of a OEM one).

Its not necessary to change the waterpump when the camebelt is being changed- but most people change the waterpump when the cambelt is being replaced to save future labour costs as said and also for piece of mind.

You don't need to remove the cambelt to change the waterpump, but you will have to remove the cambelt covers to remove the waterpump.

Ok, that's what I wanted to hear mate. Is it necessary to remove the cambelt to remove the waterpump? NO. Basically I want to do that later on along with some other upgrades. I will see. Thanks for your help guys...
