Steering Vibration

Recommended Posts

Hello to you all,

I Have a steering wheel vibration at 60 MPH (approx) - this does not occur all of the time!

No issue under heavy braking.

Combined to this my gear level vibrates like no ones business at speed.

Sounds like a balancing issue i know - had a new set of tyres and balanced at 3 seperate garages, this has resulted in a marked improvement yet it is not 100% right.

Lexus Birmingham quoted me £107 for an hours investigation which i am still laughing at.

Can anyone help as it's driving me to distraction!

Many thanks in advance.

:D

i would do Dlayen said seems like a good idea.

Just a thought, but, do you maybe have a flat spot on one of your tyres?? I had this before and it drove me nuts.. wheel balancing.. blah dee blah, but turned out to be a front tyre flatspot..

Col... :winky:

If you visit a specialist who has a decent tyre balancing machine (e.g. WIM) then they will be able to tell if the wheel/tyre is flat-spotted, as well as balancing it. The decent machines even tell the operator exactly where on the wheel to put the weight, whereas a lot of them just tell them how much to add (but not where). I had an awful vibration problem when I first bought my IS200, and WIM sorted me out a treat.

What make of tyres are on the car?

I found that budget branded tyres are impossible to balance correctly leading to bad vibration when braking/driving.

Hello,

Thanks for the advice. However i have tried changing the wheels around and have a new set of Falkens on the car, my local mechanic can see no fault with the brakes

Would it seem a good idea to have one final attempt at balancing and if so can you advise as to a decent specialist? I live just outside Tamworth.

Many thanks.

It might be worth a try. As I mentioned before, WIM will do a good job on this.

Also, if you haven't had it done already, it would be well worth getting a full geometry setup at WIM, which should stop any premature tyre wear issues (which are very common on the IS200 due to the factory geometry settings being rubbish) and improve handling too. More details on their website here.

As part of the geometry setup, WIM's Hunter Hawkeye machine will be able to spot if your suspension is damaged in any way, which could perhaps also produce problems like the one you're describing.
