New Headunit

Recommended Posts

hey I am planning on getting a new headunit on thursday, looking for a double din, have around 400-450 euro to spend so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I was looking at the JVC KW-AVX820

DNX-7200 ?

http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/dnx7200.asp

Can't fault mine, although if I could do it all over again I'd probably just car-pc it, chipped xbox running XBMC or linux

really? what would the advantages of doing it that way be?

i will watch this thread with interest as i've been having a mooch around eBay for a nice double din touch screen unit - but i really have no idea about car audio stuff so lost amongst all the possibilities out there!!

i'll start another thread to save crappin this one up though mate.....

that kenwood unit looks tasty - but more than 450 euros as stevie said.....

what functions/feautures u after mate?

the car pc's are great, but a lot of work i believe. i remember ahmet (surgical virus) had one in his IS300 and that was superb. a few other members have done similar so might be worth a search. i think anees also had one, but could be wrong??

Yeah i am have been mooching around aswell but was completely lost so decided to post this and hopefully get a better idea, not sure on the price of the kenwood, they are saying on the website it has been replaced by a newer unit, i know the jvc one is about 800 euro but I can get it for about 420,

looking for something that will play dvd's, cd's decent radio, has Bluetooth for my phone, i can hook my ipod touch up to to play video, the jvc has all this, would just need one extra cable to play video of the ipod, I am just not sure if they are any good and what people's past experiences have been with jvc or if there is better alternatives with all the same functionality

It's a damn sight cheaper :whistling: and XBMC has a lovely GUI that's perfect for car pc's - and makes great use out of the slightly lackluste CPU of the ol' Xbox

You'd be suprised, prices are tanking on that end of the head unit market at the moment - Pioneer and Kenwood brought out FAR to many models in the space of 2-3 years and the DNX-7200's getting on in the grand scheme of things, but still does everything I need it to - Satnav, Bluetooth, video ipod connectivity, DVD, reversing cam

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kenwood-DNX-7200-Sat...%3A1|240%3A1318

Try watching that one and see what it ends up shifting for, I could be wrong of course!

I would have a clue how to do the car pc, maybe with a bit of research, the kenwood looks very nice, gonna keep my eye on that one,

Car PC's are hard to work with when your driving. great idea but not pratical unless you have software like centrafuse. and thats expensive! other thing is there not hugely reliable, have to wait for them to star up when you start the car and most hard drives are very badly affected by bumps even when using anti vibration cages.

Kenwood make some great head units but JVc is a great budget alternative

whilst it wont have the same sq, features and connectivity as the top of the range stuff.. in mid range the 810 is a great unit. the newer 820 has the Bluetooth built in and is on offer here >> 820 link

the big thng here for those wanting to use amps is the 5v prepouts which both of the JVC's have but only the top end ones from kenwood.

at 400 euros i would question where form as that is well below the trade price...

as for car pc.. some great stuff you can do but will be VERY hard to get good sound quality and would cost as much of not more to do this..You also need to be quite IT savvy to fix it when it inevitably goes wrong(unless you use a mac mini!!) For most people until there is a double din one box soloution it wont be an option. Although we are close to having a 2box soloution availiable in the open marketplace.

to close..

if you can afford the extra the kenwood 8220 is the big dog of incar AV. an extremely close second £for£ an extremely good option it has to be the JVC

the only thing i can think of is the dvd compatability, i need to find out if jvc lock their regions or if it can be changed, not sure about sat nav's, i know a few friends have picked up sat nav's in the states and they have just upgraded the software on them to use over here,

IIRC i emailed pioneer about a unit i was gonna buy in the US and they said it wouldn't fully work in the UK for some reason or the other (can't find the damn email!!lol!!) and it'd be best to buy one in the UK......

Are you sure about that mate? With how weak the pound is at the mo a lot of stuff actually costs more in the US than it does over here........

Also frequencies aren't always an issue as you say, but although it will play ntsc and pal it will still most likely be region 1 coded for DVD (unless stated otherwise) so just something to be aware of.

Ahh, my bad should have spotted that! Yep then stuff from the US must be quite well priced for you at the mo (and probably from the UK too I'd imagine)

Yeah i was actually looking at it in the uk first but works out about 100 euro cheaper if i get it from the states including all the shipping costs, and so far its looking like it will work fine here, just waiting for a confirmation email

hey so i got a reply of jvc, the first time they replied they weren't really sure if it would work here and then i emailed them back the specs of the model i had been looking at and the reply was that they don't have any information on the latest american models so they can't be of any further help, and the only info they had was on last years models, how can a company not know their own products and the latest ones at that, i work for ibm in software and there are literally thousands of products and i am constantly updated on the latest products and i am not even a specialist

mate i honestly reckon u should buy one from the UK as you can bet ur bottom dollar (excuse the pun :shutit: ) that it won't work as it should over here and will end up being a waste of cash??

like i said, the pioneer lot said NOT to buy it from the states, but i'm sure there may be ways around things but i'm not clued up at all when it comes to ICE etc.

hope you get it sorted either way mate - look forward to seeing what headunit you opt for

i think you are being a bit short sighted here mate..

Why would JVC UK want to give you support on a US model?it does them no good to support you buying a product from another country as it doesnt add any value to their business and just causes headaches with customer service when things go wrong.

Some business offer worldwide warranties but normally only on portable units ie ipods, mobile phones etc..

Grey imports are the bane of all industrys.. if you want full support, warranty and confidence that it will work 100% then buy a UK spec unit. a US uniyt wont have the correct radio frequencies and will be region locked.
