Yes it does from what i've heard, and the IS stands for "Intelligent Sport". But forgot what the SE stands for.

If I recall correctly amongst early marketing bumph i've got, Lexus itself doesn't actually stand for anything as such though it's supposed to imply Luxury and Elegance, but it was a refinement of the original chosen name, Alexis.

Yes, the name is derived from "Alexis", one of 219 suggestions put forward by an image consultancy!! It is a combination of luxury and elegance. And SE is Special Edition

GS - Grand Sports Sedan

ES - Executive Sedan

IS - originally Intermediate Sports Sedan, MKII it became Intelligent Sports Sedan for some reason.
