Are they the same thing ?

I am speaking to my cousin to see if he will ship me over a set of coilovers from the USA but they are for an IS300 , is it the same car just a different engine or am i about to be gutted ?

I did try using the search function before asking this question ..

not 100% sure on this mate but the actual coilover should fit, but the spring weight/loading is different on the 300 to the 200.

think it should be do-able, but there will be other members who'll let u know for sure mate.

I'm pretty sure that coilovers in general are suitable for each of the IS200/300/Altezza.

Yes, effectively the IS300 is just an IS200 with a different engine. ok, there are a few other differences but things like coilovers and ARBs generally fit both.

They are the same fitment, just spring rates are sometimes different, IS200 coilovers are usually actually ones designed for the lighter RS200 I think, with the IS300 being heavier any coilovers bought from the USA are usually better rated springs I think to account for that.

Ages ago Mr Singh did a group but for Apexi coilovers which I think were designed for the IS300 but thye worked fine on all the cars, Fargo had a set on his IS300 and Am had them on his RS200 from memory and they were both fine :) Think Neil has them on his RS200 too?

It'll be the same sort of story with ARBs. The TTE ARBs are probably the only ones specifically designed for the IS200, whereas I imagine the Cusco/C-Ones are designed for the Altezza and the Hotchkis for the IS300. But they all seem to get good reports on the IS200.

I presume that the upgrade over the OEM items, whether its coilovers or ARBs, is probably significant enough to make differences between the models negligible. Though of course it's always interesting to learn otherwise.

Yeah definitely mate, the only thing to watch out for is not to go too tight all around otherwise you can end up making the backend step out all the time, I saw this years ago over on My.is where some of the guys had gone for very stiff coilovers in conjunction with the thickest antiroll bars they were selling in the USA! They were saying it was slightly better handling wise to move to a softer aftermarket ARB in conjunction with their coilovers (can't remember which ones) as it was more predictable.

Clawley was once explaining it and it's to do with the fact that as the chassis has been tightened so much you've got less flex to absorb the energy that's going through the chassis and so that's why they will step out more easily - some people do prefer that though for drifting and stuff, mine's a daily driver though so keeping it sensible for now :)

Tein as one example redeveloped the CS line for the US - I think originally all territories got one version, now they're not listed in Japan or Europe but they have both V1 and V2 over in the USA, with the second version having stronger rated springs I believe?

It could also be to do with the differing road types as well maybe?

I just looked on ToyoDIY and they're different mate? JCE10 chassis uses different length springs and different dampers to the GXE10

im still going to go fishing though as im desperado for coilys (on a budget) as i really want my car on its arse and i see the lowest springs you get are 40mm drop , thats just not going to cut it for me.

They would still work mate, you're just best off getting ones designed for the 200, ie from Japan or usually the English ones as they're imported from Asia :)

What sort of price were the ones he was on about?

I got the HSD HR ones on mine and they're great, good price and punch way beyond their price point!

Having said that, most manufacturers just seem to produce one set of coilovers for all the various models - after all, they're adjustable.

They are damping adjustable but the different springs may cause wallowing or bouncing at various speeds, the damping rate has a lot to do with it too, all a bit beyond me as they vary massively manufacturer to manufacturer too!
