Hi all, its about a year since I was on the forum,.

Had some Quotes to have my Cam belt change including the tensioner, At £407 and with the idler pulleys £692, “Now” is it necessary to have the idlers replaced on my 1996 LS400 122000 miles.

Your thoughts on this matter please.

Regards Syd

Hi Syd,

I would go for the lot i.e. belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump but I got my spares from the USA and had my local garage fit them for £100.00 ( I think their quote was wrong but the price was honoured).

Not only is your engine destroyed if the belt breaks but all the other parts mentioned will have the same effect if they fail plus it's another stripdown at least.

I seem to remember that forum member CB1300 had his done recently so may be worth a PM.

Cheers,

Steve

the engine isn't destroyed with a cambelt failure on a 1996 LS400.

It isn't necessary to have the idlers replaced however the main cost of fitting a new cambelt is the labour, if the idlers only lasts another 10k miles that would be another £400+.
