it's 60k or 6 years whichever comes first and not 10 years or 100k(it was revised downwards),there seems to be a bit of confusion on this but it was originally 100k but later revised to 60k

Fair enough, but either way he needs to get them done now

Is the downward revision to 60/6 just for the IS200 or the whole Lexus range?

I know it applies to the mk1 IS200(as I still own one) but does not apply to the IS250 (also own one) as it is chain driven.

Definitely get it done. If you get Lexus parts it will only cost about £35 for the belt and £65 for the tensioner. Because I was dubious about letting an independent do such a critical job, I got Lexus to do it. Cost £300 all in including collection and return. They checked the idler and water pump and said they were OK.

This is a post I remembered from some time ago, the belt rarely snaps but bearing wear in the idler/tensioner and waterpump can cause the belt to run untrue resulting in what you see.

Reviving an old thread again. (What can I say? It's an old car)

Would my IS300 be included in this move from 10 years/100k miles to 6 years/60k miles? I'm going to be pee'd off if it is because a) it's the first I've heard of it and b) that makes my car overdue and the interval was mentioned more than once prior to purchase from Lexus.

just a bit of advise, even if it isn't,do you have any history to say its been done?if not its better to be safe then sorry and have it done

If you do need to get it done, I would get it done by Lexus as it is such a critical component. If they mess  it up then you have far better come back than a local garage. However, shop around because not all Lexus dealers charge the same.

Yes. The car has full main dealer history and it was done in 2010. The car has still only done a little over 54k miles but there was discussion about getting it done in 2020. If the interval has changed this was never pointed out and it would be due now.

I until a few months ago owned a IS200 sports which I had for 8 years, had the cambelt done at just over 55,000 and then again at just under 80,000 miles as it was 60,000 miles or 6 years whichever comes first. However am sure someone on here will confirm  that its 100,000 miles or 10years,whichever comes first

Had a bit of garage time so I took the covers off to have a look.

Pretty healthy by the looks of it.

I also checked the service records.

Service book and sticker on the engine indicate it was done 7 years ago. The car will have been 8 years old at this point.

Schedule just says 100k miles and no mention of time intervals.

Now I'm sure 10 years/100k miles was mentioned by the dealer but this possible change discussed above does concern me. However, most posts relate to the IS200.

Can any more light be shed on this before I call the dealer tomorrow?

Did you eventually contact the dealer?if you can afford it there's no harm in having it done slightly early though

Right, breathe easy guys  IS300 with the 2JZ is definitely 10 years or 100,000 miles. I was advised that as long as my mileage doesn't suddenly go stratospheric I'm OK waiting until 2020.

And a nice chat with Danny at Lexus Leeds.

good at least you have now got peace of mind knowing it doesn't need doing for a couple of years 😊

He seemed genuinely enthused about the possibility of seeing an IS300 too! Yet another good experience with Lexus dealers. This is getting tiresome

I think I've been very lucky.

I've had my 2000 plate IS200 from new (3 years company car and then I bought it off the lease firm).  Had it serviced by local Lexus garage till about 5 years ago.  Only done 130K so definitely serviced by Lexus at 60K.  Engine Management light came on few weeks ago, local (non-specialist) garage plugged it in, showed P1346, possible camshaft position issue. Advised me to check when the cam belt was last replaced.  Checked my Lexus garage paperwork and couldn't find any mention of it being replaced.  Tried calling them to check but they only keep service records for 2 years (!).

So called my local independent specialist (UK Tecknics in Maidenhead) and took it over there and here's the state of mine... seems likely it's never been replaced

Eeek!

I've left it with them to replace...

Thanks for the pinned post here otherwise I would not have realised how serious this could be.

Sorry for the necro, you were lucky indeed so was i bought the car on 23Feb20 the car had 98900 miles on was driving alright and the only thing i noticed at the time was the driver side rear spring when i opened the timing cover i was greeted by the belt "eating" itself 😥

Bugger. Seemed such a long way away when I posted this.

Hi all - sorry another question on this thread...

I have a 2003 with just over 50,000 from new (it was owned by an old boy most of its life, from what I can see).

Service history is mostly there, but its not entirely clear when the cam belt was last changed.

I plan to get it done anyway, including the tensioner, but wondered if there is any point doing the water pump at the same time. Explicitly, my logic is that the existing Toyota/Lexus pump has only done 50,000 miles and is not showing any issues, so is arguably better than replacing with a pattern copy?

Any and all thoughts very welcome!

Thanks guys.

Was interested in this thread but find that "Cali369" image of his Cam belt is not found, but an explanation mark replaces.  Damn! My Belt was replaced at 68k in 2008 and Car has done 132k.

I have purchased the complete parts to have replaced. However, my mechanic seems unwilling or too busy to do the job and I doubt Lexus would touch it with the proverbial, even though I seem to recall a thread once suggesting they had an offer on, with changing a CB.  Ancient history no doubt.

I will take off the plastic cover and check how it looks at several turns of the engine. Really reluctant to drive to France (should it ever happen) with the existing belt.  If its a Toyota Belt and looks good then may have to take a chance.  Two dead Cars in France would be just my luck!
