Hi everyone need some help here !!!

My dads car was parked outside on the road, a van managed to hit and damage the front wing, and drove off, a witness came forward and provided details of the van, reg make and model, and also provided her info, police have investigated it and cannot locate the current keeper but have provided the previous keeper,

we are going to report it to the insurance company tomorrow but my dad has a 400 excess, hes with direct line,

would there want this upfront? and then cliam it back from the other insurers later or as his car was stationary and he had nothing to do with it, will there not ask for the payment?

I hope its the latter

Hi,

There are many types of "excesses" compulsary/voluntary and the amounts also vary on other issues e.g.theft excess, fire excess.

I am no expert but the excess is normally deducted from the settlement figure and if this is for repairs you may have to pay the excess to the repairer.

You are best to contact the insurers and ask them the proceedure.

The worst senario is the failing to stop unregistered probably uninsured driver.

If you dad has the legal protection bit of the policy let them sort it out.

Can't be sure but I seem to remember on the Direct line advertisements they said they cover you against uninsured drivers but whether this includes the policy excess I don't know.

You say the police only have details of the previous registered keeper has this person admitted to selling the vehicle?

I would contact the DVLA yourself and request the information, only costs £2.50 I think. In any case, your insurance company should be able to find out that information as well without needing the police.

All you need to do is get them to check the insurance database, because doesn't Direct Line advertise that if you get hit by an uninsured driver then you won't have to pay out anything? If the other guy wasn't insured, then you shouldn't have to pay a penny.
