i remember the last bloke on here that had a snapped cambelt and the head was trashed... valves were bent and pistons needed changing - doesnt sound like non interference if that happened

I'm even more confused now :duh:

Mat, you're saying that Lexus/Toyota say it is not a non-interference engine on the IS200 (which is what the lack of an asterisk seems to indicate in the table above), but it is only some LOC people that say it is non-interference ? I thought it was the other way round in that lots of people have been saying here that it is not non-interference :duh:

No...read what i said, lexus say it is NOT an Interference engine, it is only some people on LOC who say it IS an interference engine

the engine codes marked with an * indicate which engines are INTERFERANCE

i dont ever remember an is200 belt going, i do however remember an Altezza belt going and damaging the head and piston crowns

Was that a 1G-FE engine though ? Presumably it couldn't have been, because if it was non-interference then no damage should have happened ?

nope it was 3s-ge but.........the 3s-ge is also non-interference :shutit: but i think there was more to the 3s-ge engine failure than was posted on the forums, im trying to find the topic

i have searched and found no topic on an is200 engine cambelt failure.....only mention was a topic by a guy stating his buddys car had a cambelt failure which caused head damage, but it was a Alfa

Posted

ok, so cambelt failure on the IS200, whilst inconvenient, actually is a lot less bad than has been made out on here. So cambelt replacement is more of a preventative maintenance issue really, rather than something ultra-critical.

I feel a lot less bad now about my cambelt being 9 years old !

Posted

No....its critical it is checked, and changed at the correct point, or before if needed including the tensioner as well

Don't get me wrong, mine's already been visually checked by Lexus and they say it looked ok (not a complete guarantee, I know). I'm still planning to get it changed soon, with tensioners etc, and the water pump as well. But at least I know that in the unlikely chance of it failing, I shouldn't end up with any major damage.

Posted

Timing Belt, Tensioner, Idler Pulley, and Water Pump & by-pass were changed on mine, and the Idler and Water Pump

are good to be changed purely as a preventative/peace of mind measure if you can. A member on LOC couldn't afford

to get the Water pump changed when his belt was replaced, and it failed shortly afterwards...........

best to at least ask them to check it and the by-pass, but replacement if you can afford it is best IMO.

This is all pretty interesting stuff, but why are there interference engines in the first place if they cause so much damage when the belt goes? Do they have performance advantages?

It is surprising the belt going after 20k miles, I'd want to make sure there wasn't some other problem in there that LED to the belt going prematurely. Hopefully there is no damage and all you need is a new belt :)

where do i find the engine code on there ??

also i think who ever did he last belt change did abit off a cowboy job. because when i got the car, the air box and the top cover on the cambelt had no screws init, it was held down with tie clips.

i had a look at the manual you put up chris, its gone over my head, so i guess its going to the garage.

Probably be the best thing to do matey, thought i'd post it up so you could see what was involved with the replacement :) plus you now have it for future reference :D

what do you mean engine code?

As in the engine in the IS200 is a 1GFE?

Posted

cant find the post i was refering to earlier but i do remember a note in the manual about turning the crank in the normal direction of rotation otherwise there will be piston/valve contact.

Posted

yah, agree with that Rob...must always turn in the correct direction.

anyway, ill phone TMG tommorow and get a definitive answer

i found 1 posst about some lad asking if anyone had some valves as his belt went and had bent a load - but its not the post i was looking for.

the engine was idleing i was stood at traffic lights when it snaped ? so the engine was running slow what extend do you thing the damage will be ?? ive tryed starting it a couple of time aswel, take it thats bad news.

Looks like i was right :winky: Hope you get sorted mate :D

jus an update about the is200 bein a 'non-interferance' i dont agree with it and dont tink it is correct.

Spent the day at the garage replace the cambelt. Start The engine up, it wasnt happy it was it was rattling, so strip the engine to find 6damaged pistons.
