Cam a Silent Hipower be un silenced by removing the extra can ?

Posted

yeah, wondered if romoving it would make it sound like the old hipower

Posted

ooohhhh,in that case if your good at welding or know someone and you dont mind butchering it to find out then you can always put it back on

Looking at it Chris, its quite possible to do and the older hipower looks like the same box without the extra silencer fitted if i remember? be worth a go mate :D

I have this system and I have discussed the same idea with a coupe of mates.

We reconed it would be possible, but i not gonna bother to do it.

If you do, be sure to feedback here how it works, I'd love to know and may reconsider doing mine.

So is that exhaust as quiet as the OEM lexus exhaust, as im thinking about having it. Also i wonder how much the insurance would slap on when i declare one on the lexus....

:offtopic:

My insurance for this year has remind the same...surely it shoud go down a bit at least!

I had mine next to a mates IS. The HKS was quieter than the standard car!

Chris, did you ever get round to this?

You could always weld the side can onto another car, to would silence it! (May not work.)

no still as it was, need find someone who can remove it and blank it so it can be re-attached

cant Mick do that?

its basically a resonator, it disrupts the exhaust flow to reduce noise, by chopping it off you will most likely increase the noise but may loose a little backpressure and decrease the power output, all depends on how well it was designed in the first place !

Posted

why would you loose backpressure, its a sealed resonator, its not like he will be changing anything other than the removal of the external resonator

back pressure will be the same as the normal HKS hiper

he probably could do, but it wouldnt be plugged in stainless steel

just never bothered since as im still contemplating selling up if the tax increases go ahead

because the resonator by design disrupts flow

by taking it out you introduce a "straight through" flow

so taking the fact that the original hiper was designed for the is200/Altezza, then by adding backpressure on the silent power model, over and above what the std hiper had, that means that , the action of silencing the sound was by increasing back pressure more than was needed, and by increasing back pressure more than needed you would be also reducing torque low end.

as you said by design the resonator disrupts flow..it does not divert gas flow, for it to divert the gas flow the resonator would need to be open ended, (i.e return to the silencer or exit to atmos)

as it does not, what it in essence does do is scavange away the sound waves or the resonance from the gas flow

the extra resonator works at ist optimum point at low rpm, low speed, low gas velocity

if i can be removed and easy to re-attach if i come to sell the exhaust then i will do it

NO!!!

Everyone is saying this. If you do that, then they have won!
