Stereo -- Nearly There

Recommended Posts

Spent 3 hours working on the car, then left it with the local ICE specialist ALL DAY, then spent another 4 hours on it myself. The stereo is now nearly finshed!

Now i figured that my 6x9s, although big (93mm mounting depth) would fit over the boot bars, with spacers. The shop that did the work said they wouldn't, and me being in a rush, told them to rip out the offending bars and just screw the speakers in. Which they did.

Now, anyone tried lifting a boot lid with no help from the car? It's heavy, and won't stay open on it's own! (Speakers sound good thou!)

So, has anyone fitted speakers this size with no clearance issues? If so, what size spacers did you use? Also, i was thinking of gettin a gas strut to open the boot. Will this be sufficient to lift the weight of the bootlid?

Got no other photos at the min, but power wiring is very tidy...

Sounded like the spacers were too small, you probably needed a 18mm mdf spacer ring on 6x9s rather than a thinner one,

or the bootlift bars will hit the magent (as you now know :tsktsk:).

The shop really could have made you some that would have fitted.

See this thread on how to.

There is a thread about bootlid needs viagra on LOC for hydraulic bootlid strut solution.

So looking at the pics, you have 2x 4AWG power leads through to your boot install ?

Nice to see someone taking power needs seriously :D

Yeh i thought that was the case. I just wanted it put in quickly to go cruising in newquay last weekend! I suggested to them 23mm mdf, do you think that will be too thick?

I know people have fittted the struts, but do you need two or will one lift it? and is that as well as the standard bars, or instead of? I have a feeling even if i space the speakers and refit the bars, they will rattle wit the 3000 watts beneath them!

Yes, Wozza, ya gotta be serious about powering! 100amp circuit breakers and all! I dont think my Battery will stand up to well to the power now demanded of it running 1600 watts RMS (5k peak!) So.... bigger Battery or power cap? I know some people have strong (though confilicting!) optinions on this.

I have mostly Vibe kit, which you may not be a fan of. But i've had verious bits over the years and this is all top end gear, not their "halfords" type ranges! which are cheaply made. Ive always been inpressed with the quality/power for the price. I have put put around £1600 into this setup, so by no means cheap!

I'm gonna be accused of willy-waving here but....

0AWGPowerFuseByBattery.jpg

The bigger the cable the less it will lose going to the boot, so 1 big one or 2 mediums should cover most systems

unless going for an SPL style set-up.

My system is also about on the limit for the standard Battery/Charging system.

Uprated Battery/SplitCharging System & second Battery/Power Cap are all options for big power amps.

If going for a Power Cap, (opinions differ as to wether they are good or bad) remember this piece of advice.....

go for a very respected brand name, don't buy cheap or you will get more problems than you solve !!

RE: the spacers, cut a couple of blocks of varying thickness 18, 20 & 23mm to place at each end of a 6x9,

then refit the shelf to ensure it will fit, and look underneath to check the gap.

lookin good..

i have a gas strut that im not using anymore as my boot is too heavy with all the deadining and lining in there. pm if you are interested..

with only a quick glance i would say to check if those are the correct fuse ratings.. 100a seems too high..

would upgrade the big three next as you may start having some poweerd drain as you said and its a cheap easy enough job to do..

@aaron: one should be enough, most people would run one cable and split in the rear (normally works out cheaper) but either way can work..

how come you have 2 power cables i thought 1 was enough

One for each amp.

I've seen that willy waved before! Let into a bit of an argument if i remember rightly...

Still, nice willy Wozza.

You have PM.

I figured 100amp would be about right, the mid amp has 3x35amp onboard anyway, and running quite high power, 3000 peak 1000 RMS and 2000 peak 600 RMS. If someone wants to do the math for me...

what amps are they?

vibe dont do amps rated at those rms figs?

Uhm, yes they do. I have...

VIBE Slick A4 running mid range, 3x35amp fuses as mentioned above:

VIBE SQ12 (Space driver):

sub2.jpg

Just for your info, Vibe also make an amp that puts out 1500 RMS, i've seen TWO of them running into a Carbon-Coned Black Death Woofer peaking at 7.5k! That is loud.

ok..

got confused, thought you had one amp giving 600w rms and 1000w rms!!

i cant remeber how to work out the correct fuse.. does seem a bit high though but might be wrong!

i have a 30amp on a 300/4 and a 60 amp on a 500/1..

its worth checking as the last thing you want is wires melting or blowing something!!

have seen the vibe black death stuff.. not bad for the price but no sound quality at all and if you want spl then there are much better..

thknk you have a nice system for what you have spent and sure you will get many hours of pleaseure... untill you decide to upgrade!! its a slippery slope!! :winky:

get some soundproffing on.. will be the best money you ever spent.. recently done the doors and the fronts now play bass better than some subs!!

get some soundproffing on..

I have recently done some on my car, the trouble is now the roof flexes and now really needs doing,

along with another coat on the bootlid (still flexing badly).

Dynamat & Dynamat Extreme is good, a cheaper alternative is ivanhoe sound deadening (Item number: 290233364360 or Item number: 230255076263)

which does the job almost as well but with a reduced cost. I have used a combination of these on my car, buying as & when I could afford it.

stick to extreme.. cant be beat IMO.. if yougo to a decent shop they should be able to look after you price wise and not RRP..

think the only real alternativbe is second skin (?)

@wozza.. try filling the boot lid with acoustic material or failing that towels!! you will be surprised at the difference..

have filled all my holes with stuff!!

yes, mid range amp will do 4x150rms, and i'm unsure of the spec of the sub amp, thou i have read its over 600rms and sounds it (sub capable of upto 1000 rms, hoping to amp it better in future). so, in reality that two amps doing 600rms each.

currently just have 6x9s and sub fitted, need to do fit components ASAP. sound proofing at some stage, but im very skint, big credit card bills and rent etc. and modest (16k) income. wont be able to afford a major upgrade for some time yet! (if ever.)
