Need To Apply The Handbrake When Shifting Into 'p'?

Recommended Posts

You don't need to and often if I'm making a quick stop I don't pull up the handbrake but most of the time I do simply because I don't like the way the car rocks - it's got to be applying pressure somewhere everytime it does that which inevitably must be wearing something out faster than it should.........

I don't understand why people don't apply the handbrake wherever they park, unless it's for an extended duration... i.e. weeks/months. I realise that being in park (or in-gear, in a manual) is enough to prevent it rolling away, but the brake is there for a reason. Ya know?

+1

Hate that feeling, I always envisage little cogs wearing away somewhere....

In "Winter Driving Tips" page 180 of the Owner's manual states not to use the parking brake (for manual or auto) when parking in case the parking mechanism might freeze so it can't be absolutely necessary in normal conditions (and not just for autos!)....

btw, this can't be just for Lexuses and/or ISs but good practice for all cars?!?

Practicalities aside... It used to be a legal requirement that you always applied your parking brake... Not sure if it still is

I never used to apply it on my old 5 series and the mechanism seized up, so it does pay to use it now and then...
