Is200 - Ignition Jammed In Acc Position

Hi,

So finally after a year of saying I was going to buy one, I went out and set in motion the process of buying my dream car, the IS 200.

So after a delayed ryanair flight and 20 minutes dealing with a very confused national express representative, I was on my way to pick up my new motor.

I arrived just north of London to be met by a man who looked like he has spent the majority of his life sleeping with his head out the window, so to cut a long story short, test drove the car, drove like a peach, very comfy, got back to his house, took the key out of the igntion, went to put it back in and start it, the thing is jammed in the acc position, guy said it had happened only once before and spent the next 30 minutes twisting the key back and forth, eventually rang the AA, this tool another 45 minutes to arrive, then spent the next hour listening to his 16 year old daughter go on about how she likes to get thrashed in the pub(her 60 yr old grandmother sitting on the couch beside her), went out to see what was going on and the aa guy had taken the dash half off and bypassed the ignition, so the car could start but everytime I did, it looked like I was stealing my car. On the advice of the AA guy said it shouldn’t cost more than 100 pounds to fix so on that advise the guy took 200 off the price, fair enough I think.

Back to the boat, lovely roads compared to Ireland, very pleasant drive. Back home, showing off my shiny new car.

Into work today, called my loacal Lexus dealership, told him my problem, left me on hold for about 10 minutes, came back, asked me how many keys I had for the car, left me on hold for another 5 minutes(I would have normally hung up at this stage but I was in work and getting paid for it), came back to me, quoted me €1240, I nearly crapped my pants. I could get myself a nissan micra for that. So I politely told him where to go, rang another Lexus dealership and something similar but this guy was little more helpful and told me it might be worth my while calling a locksmith and checking that, so I did and he quoted me €25 euro and about 2 hours work to fix the barrel, said he gets this all the time. So that’s what I'm going to do.

My main question is, has anyone done this to fix the problem, does it last?

I also asked about having a new barrel made for the key and he said he had never heard of this, but a few people on the forum have said they got a new one made and cost about 80 pounds, does anyone know where to get this done and what I need to get it done?

Also now I have to get the CD player fixed, but I know somebody who will do this for cheap so thats not a problem,

Even after this I'm still very happy with the car, its an absolute joy to drive and I wouldnt change it for anything and once these small problems are fixed I hope to keep it for a very long time.

Thats brilliant,

He said I would have to change the whole lock set, so new locks on all the doors and boot and a new set of keys, told me I couldnt get a new barrel on its own.

Yeah, have the 2 master(one was a little butchered by the aa guy) and the single 2 button key.

Hello fella, glad to hear that the problem should be sorted relatively cheaply.

It is a glowing example why the club is so important, I bet there are people who have paid €1240 or similar prices to have this fixed because the dealer or local garage told them thats what was needed. If only everyone came here first!!
