Fogging And Condensation In Headlight

Recommended Posts

My (Harrier)headlight has suddenly fogged up/ filled up with droplets of condensation. Have checked, all the bulbs are corectly fitted and in place.Has anyone had this problem and does anyone think if I remove the headlight I could perhaps check the seal and make it air/watertight ?. Unfortunately all the "cheap" headlights around are for the pasenger side and mine is on the drivers side.Even leaving the vehicle in the sun does not cure this problem.

Any thoughts or does it look like I will have to buy a new unit from Lexus ?. Cheers.

unless there is an obvious leak like through the bulbs etc that can be cured, normally it's a new unit I'm afraid.

Yes,that is what I am afraid off and will contact some breakers yards.Have found a new unit on the web but as usual it is for the other side and only cost £40 all in.Have downloaded dismantling instructions and it is not so simple as you have to remove part of the front grill and the fender lining etc. When I have done this will check if any obvious reason for this fault as a last resort. Thanks.

Cheers Harold

i'd be tempted to leave it until it shows signs of rusting or fails the MOT. It may dry up over time and may be a one off.

I agree with you as have just been quoted by a breaker for a used headlight a price of £205 plus delivery.Hate to think what Lexus would charge.Unfortunately although much cheaper in US not much good to us.

Was given a tip that putting a hair dryer to the bulb ports sometimes helps especially just before going for a MOT.

Harold I would persevere with it until one comes up on eBay That guy at a breakers yard is taking the Pi$$ at that price. I bet Lexus is cheaper.

I know you need a drivers side but contact these guys on eBay and see if they can get you one here...Ebay link headlamp

have you removed headlight and put a bead of sealant around the join?worth a go

or heat in oven to soften oem glue then try to move the the two halves, may be lucky

check for any cracks.....more about time than cost :)

Will certainly do that as you suggested when I finally remove the headlight. Was going to do it pm but heavens opened.Did something similar on an old g-wagen(oops) that I had where both headlight glasses had parted from their reflectors. In the end found out I could buy VW golf mk 2 lights and they fitted @£25 each rather than the @£80 plus MB wanted to charge.Afraid not the option for us.Thanks again Harold

PS Trying to resolve problem on auto at the moment where OD light flashes and it will not change up into 4th nor allow use of tiptronic controls.Had it checked at Lexus but they could not find anything major on their fault codes.

Unfortunately the Lexus GB codes only allow them to go so far into the system.

  • 8 years later...

Noticed a few weeks ago that mine RX400h's passenger side headlamp started having condensation inside. Today it is raining heavy, so once I parked in the office garage and got out - noticed that my HID had gone off. Tried turning the headlight of and on a few times - HID came back up but flickering and not as bright as it should be (faintly blueish)... So I am assuming water is messing with the contacts...

I have an extended warranty with Lexus - will try calling them up to see what they say.
