Best Route To Florence Italy ?

Am off to Florence on 4th June.

Idea is to get there as quick as possible taking a scenic route back.

Am scheduled to arrive at the hotel evening of 5th.

Whats the best route ? thinking of heading to Lyon (approx 1/2 way) overnighting then off bright & early

However I'm sure some of you will have an alternative route which will be better.

Route back is not a problem as were away for 2 weeks with only 5 days booked in Florence.

Any guidance appreciated (hotels in Lake Como area as well)

Was in Firenze, sorry Florence last year but flew in and hired a Merc which was a complete waste while we explored Florence as we left it in the hotel car park the entire time. It's not a city you even want to try and drive in. Taxi and hotel shuttle was the sane way. :D

Lakes are excellent as long as you're not there in August when all Italy takes the month off.
