Me too... mmmm i wonder if this is the result of the forum getting hacked a while back....

main one i get is about Fooking shares in the USA.... act quick me arse!

All you can do is keep adding each one to the spam list, i tried turning up the spam filter but it's hard to stop it filtering out "wanted" mail as well....

Me to... same spam, every time it comes through under a different name so i cannot block/filter the sender.. Is it possible to block the IP address?

I pay £1.50 per month on BT Yahoo Mail.

I had to go for Premium mail originally as I get free Broadband at home (all 8 megs through my current work company!!) so that I could get my pop server mail through MS Outlook. For a while I thought it was a wasted sum of cash.

But....

I get a Spam blocker which I can control very easily. I used to get 20 or more spammers a day, now I get zero in my inbox - they all sit in my "Bulk" folder on the BT Yahoo server and are deleted every week.

I can log into my Yahoo account and vet the spams to make sure that nothing I want to keep is being deleted by the system.

Like I say it costs £18 per year, but it's totally dependable.

PS - you can also set up alias Email accounts, get loads of web space etc for that £1.50. I know that there are Norton etc which do similar, and some freebies on the net - but I prefer this as when the system recognises Spam, it holds it's source info centrally and everyone on BT Yahoo benefits.

I don't use my old accounts now as they got bambarded and that was after filtering had already taken a load out!

I find that GMail does a good job of getting rid, but the crazy thing is that I've never publicised that address on any forum or website so it can't have been harvested so it's definite some companies are selling addresses.

Didn't actually realise that LOC had been hacked though, saw the posts that someone was trying to get in on here and WIM but didn't realise they'd got a copy of the DB. That definitely contains all the addresses, must be massive for this site though!

Nowadays I don't use valid email addresses, just throwaway ones, much easier and I never see any crap mail :)

I got a gmail account and have never used it, told anybody about it or entered it any where. Within the first two weeks it had received 32 spam messages in it. You can't escape them!

Depending on what email you use,(i use gmail) You can create filters so If a mail comes in with a certain word you can filter it to skip your inbox and go straight to trash. I work for Google and get 5000+ spam offering anything from ***** enlargements to free Lexus'! If you use gmail its worth setting up a load of filters and labels to organise the good from the bad. You can create a new gmail account and set it up so that it still appears that your mailing from your old email address. That can come in handy. It allows you to send mails from multiple different email addresses from the one log in. Hope that helps someone.

Certain programmers can design a program to automatically send mail to every single conceivable email address. Some other legit companies you may have given your email address to, could get hacked and they get your email this way. Also spyware and malware programs on your PC can gather info from your pc, send it to a server which then spams you with an appropriate email!

It's down to the way that your ISP operates their POP3 system, basically some systems give you username@ispname.com whereas others use randomtext@username.ispname.com - the second option was originally popular with Demon years ago and a lot more started using it, it's a good idea as it means you can use whatever prefix you like, on that system I used to use the website name as the prefic to the email and then if you ever got spam you could see exactly which site your email address had been obtained from!

As for GMail it does work a bit strange as well in that it ignores fullstops in the email address, so my.email.address@gmail.com and myemailaddress@gmail.com both end up in the same mailbox!

Mail systems get bombarded with brute force using a dictionary of names/words, also called the rumpelstiltskin method. All that isn't rejected as "address unknown" is stored in the spammers e-mail list. This may be why your never published gmail address is getting spammed.

Spam engines use combinations of misspeled words like "vlagra" and a few lines from a book - making every spam mail unique. Together with a very basic makeup they are almost impossible to block, if you try you will also block a lot of "ham". Not receiving legitimate mails is even worse, so I guess we'll have to live with these kinds of spam for now.
