Rusty Nuts... How Is My Engine...

Recommended Posts

The IS200 Sport 52 plate I went to see today had a number of rusty nuts when I lifted the hood... it seemed that the nuts/bolts hadn't been galvanised... and a few other bits also... is this common...?

If I attempt to show a few pictures below; could anyone give me feedback if this is normal or if something is missing please... thanks in advance

I will attempt to show some pictures...

Does my water pump leak; how bad is it...

Should the below have a cover of some sort on the electrics?

Is this rust common on nuts and other fixtures (none on the body though)?

How does the engine appear generally... is it okay...?

Bottom 4 pics look normal to me and i will take a look at mine and report back on the top 2 in a couple of mins :D

No 1 pic: Water pump does look like there is some minor leakage, some IS's have been known to replace a new w/pump @ 40k.

No 2 pic is fine same as mine :D

water pump looks the same as mine, think it has minor leak. looks exactly the same, mine was like that at 69k when i got the car, now done 100k+ and still like it, basically because im a student i can't afford a new one  and plus i need the money for precious booze.

I also have a few rusty fixings as you have shown, but most of mine have been replaced with stainless ones. :)

Thanks guys (Jason, Gord & Winnie), The IS200 Sport 52 plate has done 57k miles...

Its a shame actually that Lexus couldn't use galvanised nuts and bolts; it would do wonders for the appearance when one opens the bonnet.

Is there a rust remedy at all that I could apply; and also does the water pump need changing at this stage... Its my first Lexus you see... Thanks

Depends on how much water loss there is, if any...obviously it will need looking at sooner rather than later.

Water pump from your dealer is about £100 (i think)

You could always change most of the bolts for shiney s/steel ones if you wish

Wow, that's quite a bit to fit a water pump... if I take it to a private garage and not a Lexus dealer, will that be okay... a feline friend also pointed out that it could be worth just replacing the O ring... could be a lot less expensive...

Any idea where you could get anodised red ones from? especially the suspension tops.

Cheers

You can get them from RS but would not use if I were you as they are aluminium.

the small metal pipe just has an o ring at each end - u could always just try to replace that. you will prob find as i did, it will leak a bit then reseal itself and has not leaked for the past 3 years. clean the area then u can see if it does

i had my waterpump changed under warenty a while back.

As for the nuts and bolts, i just used M6 x 20 stainless steel hex cap bolts.

The M6 x 20 covers about 80% of all bolts that need replacing and you can get a box of 100 for about £20 from wurth.

as above, looks like you have some splashes of coolent over your exhaust heat shield.

Top mount fixings look rustier than mine...If you are worried about this sort of thing you could spray a small amount of copper grease over the fixings, should help them.
