Snow!

Has anyone had a problem in the snow with their Lexus? What exactly does the sno button do? Even in the slightest of snow drizzles my Lexus skids all over! Can anyone shed light on this?

Oh yes, I had a terrible time but fortunately we don't get much snow here.

All the snow button does is make the throttle less responsive which doesn't really help. In the snow I couldn't get to the end of my road even though much lesser FWD cars had no problem. I don't know how I didn't get totally stuck

I have only had my Lexus for a few weeks now - and I am very pleased so far. But I must admit to being a bit worried by a few of the posts that I have read about the performance in snow.

Is it really that bad? Have you seen the weather forecast for the next few days in the UK?

people, people, people, PLEASE! how many times have we got to say this: Go have a good look at the tyres that are on the IS models. They are SUMMER tyres - not designed for snow. This might have something to do with it!

If you want to go out in the snow get some winter tyres - like i have! and problem is solved. Oh yeah one more thing - dont drive like a £!£ and you wont have problems.

Sorry if tis is opening up an old topic but - you say that you have winter tyres on your car - Have you swapped them over for winter or do you always use them. And second stupid question - how do you know if they are summer or winter tyres ? (I know that is probably a really stupid question !!!!)

not a stupid Q at all - I have swapped over to winter tyres , unless you are in climates where there is snow all year round, then there is no point in using them all year round ( they can be high speed rated also) they become less effective with a tread below 8mm ( so i believe). the difference is the tread pattern - winter tyres tend to have a large block style pattern also most say winter -or something that would indicate that eg my summer tyres say "sport"

also a quick point with winter tyres it is also best to not go for wide tyres - more rolling resistance which means it ploughs its way thru rather than running on the top of the snow.

I hear what your saying Rob, but when you live in an area that has anything from no snow a year to perhaps a week of snow at most, winter tyres are a very expensive option.

obviously that would be the case, my situation is different from most of the other members here -hence the winter tyres. if you do go out in the snow just use your common sense - reduce your speed, take corners very slowly, no sudden throttle movements etc and my own preference add a bit of extra weight in the boot - keeps that back end down.

normally of a higher profile and narrow tread, usually soft compound rubber with large open block pattern

designed to cut through the snow rather than sit on the top.

Snowing today over Paris, was great fun turning back from my office.

More than 10 minutes to climb the parking ramp

Even with the snow button on it's a big difference from the IS200

When it snowed the other day (we had about 2.5 inches) it was the first time my lex had been out in the snow and I have to say I was plesently suprised! You guys had me worrying that I was going to be all over the road, but I really did not have a problem. My driveway has a 20 degree incline and it got off there no problem. The only thing I can think of is that I have just had the Toyo T1-S's fitted to the rear wheels so there is a nice deep tread there, and the tread pattern is fan shaped http://www.toyo.co.uk

The news was mildly encouraging for IS200 drivers last night - they had a reporter by one of the roads supposedly worst affected by snow and there behind him was an IS200 carefully making it's way along at the same speed as everyone else. :hohoho: :P

some ***** parked right up my *****

cant drive up the hill cos wheels spinning (ice on one side mud on t'outher)

so a 15 min wait which wasnt too bad cos i saw

Sod the snow button I need a life raft - we're under water and sinking rapidly, just had to move the Lexus to a multistorey as the Park & Ride is now under water!!!!!

I have had no problem in the snow, its a bit skittish but what car isn't.

Traction no problem, would a limited slip diff help this at all?

My wifes BMW won't even budge with traction control. Snigger Snigger

I had my first go in the snow today in mine.

Seemed ok, back wheels slipped as I pulled out the driveway into our close(non gritted)

Drive like a sane person and not a nutter and it holds the road fine I found, even on my pants Kumho tyres. (F1's next week! :D )
