Has anyone got any experience with Range Rovers?

I am very very tempted with a 3.0D HSE/Vogue probably a couple of years old. I have always liked them but never really thought about one until yesterday. Went to have a look and am 99% sure I want one.

Just wondered whether any of you chaps or chappettes have any stories to tell?

I await the flack :tomato: :winky:

Hhhmmm, interesting choice. Have you actually driven one yet?

A guy at work is currently driving around in a 55 Vogue diesel as his RR Sport only works for a few weeks at a time before blowing turbos and having to go back in for repair. The full size rangey is a very nice car, enormous and very imposing with a superb interior. For a long journey it is great, for parking anywhere other than empty car parks it gets a bit more hairy as the corners of the thing seem very far away...

The only concern would be performance, they weigh as much as the moon but the 3.0D V6 is seriously underpowered for something this size. As a benchmark which is applicable to this site, it has less power and torque than the 2.2 four pot in my 220d!!! 0-60 in 13.6 seems optimistic, they take an age to get going but are great once on the move.

Very nice car, but just not for those in a hurry or of a timid nature

Rich.

To add to the above it is as aerodynamic as brick and you will need deeeeeeeep pockets to keep the beast in go juice.

I had a test drive in a new Vogue diesel a couple of weeks ago and was very disapointed with the noise level of the engine. Everything else was brilliant. Good luck with your choice. :D

Someone living a few doors away had one - it was a V8, 2002 model (dunno the engine size) but he said the diesels were only any good for off roading (where you want loads of torque).

His was converted to LPG, and he reckoned it gave him economy equivalent (money terms) up to 30mpg in town and up to 45mpg on a run driven sensibly...

The tanks etc were all out of sight and no boot space lost at all...that I think is the thing to do....

You'll get huge performance with some cheapo fuel - can't be bad!!

Reliability, loads of dads mates have Range Rovers and all have to take them back to get stuff repaired, it'll be completely different to the lexus when u only take it in to get it serviced.

Why u thinking about one anyways?

my dads got the nissan xtrail pretty big but its jap so a bit plain inside but goes ok for a 2.2 TD and u no it wont go wrong lol have u looked at the weird looking nissan marano its got the 3.5 V6 from the 350Z in it

If you like the RR, go for it mate. Range Rover has such great heritage. It has it's flaws, but the overall package works for many people. The interior of the latest model is so beautiful.

Try and get one already converted to LPG, and also has a few TV screens fitted..heheh..

As long as you realise it's a 4x4 first, and won't even keep up with a Ford Focus 1.4 on the twisties. You can sit in traffic and look down at us mere mortals..

I know my old MD changed from an E class to a Range Rover. He prefers the RR as he finds the higher driving position allows him to see WHY there is a holdup in traffic ahead etc.

My sister is on her 4th she swears by them. She now has the Supercharged V8. Swapped it for her M5. It has DVD SAt Nat every conceivable toy. Luxurious and practicle.

I looked at 4.4 Vogue really nice, but wife put kybosh on it.

I test drove a Volvo XC90 yesterday. Very practicle but dull.

Errr, no offence, but X-trail and Range Rover are hardly in the same league. The Murano can compete at certain levels, but the RR is equivalent (in terms of price and spec) to Toyota Landcruiser, BMW X5, Mercedes M class and Volvo XC90. The RR is probably superior to all in terms of image, especially if you live in a snobby suburb!!!!

My mates got the Land Cruiser and its great. Lots of toys and looks a monster on the road.

Exactly. Go to the remotest parts of this planet, and you find Toyota pickup trucks and Landcruisers!!!

OFF TOPIC - but yes, Maneesh, they are in every bush and every outback...

See JC trying to demolish a Toyota 4x4 Pickup in Top Gear>>>????

I think somethuing as huge and as complicated as a 4x4 should be Japanese...might not have the snob appeal, but it'll get you there!!

How 'bouts a Mitsu Shogun? I've driven one of those - the gearing was naff (but then thats to be expected) but boy you felt tuff!

I am kinda set on the range rover - i am aware of the inherent problems but will be getting one with a warranty.

Probably gonna go for an HSE with a few toys - Vogue is nice but I haven't got pockets that deep !

I have booked a test drive for saturday so we'll see how i feel after that.

I don't know what it is with the Lex, I have only had it for 9 months but i don't get a buzz when i get in it any more. People keep telling me it's a lovely car but it is just a carriage now, i might as well be driving a ford mondeo :crybaby:

The Range Rover just has something about it.

Nothing definate yet though - we shall see.

Ah, Mark, the RR might be nice, but is there a RR owners club quite like this one???

ive heard of reliability problems, and huge running costs.

my choice would be a land cruiser

Or if you don't want to do any serious off-roading you may want to consider an RX350 or RX400h and avoid that smelly diesel stuff!

Hi,

If you want a Range Rover then go for it!!

I drove a 91 TD RR years ago when it was then just 6 months old.Great bit of kit,i had to towed a caravan to a new job hardly knew it was on the back. The Range Rover has come along way since the model i drove years ago.If youve got the money and can afford the running costs go for it.

Id have a look on the net for RR owners club forum and do abit of homework on what to look for before buying.

Good Luck..

Chips..

i also look back at my 3.9efi vogue with fondness, used to get between 12-20mpg, off-roading it would be single figures, still, good fun though. .

The new range rovers are nice .......... but then I still like the ones before that !

Disappearing up my own bum mate - unbeleivably busy at work at the moment - doing some silly hours. If only I got overtime ! :crybaby:

Now, to the real point, where the feck is that Bush Chicken?

Out of season at the moment matey - I can get you something after the 1st of October (if you want it shot that is!) Otherwise the best I can do is Tesco's the same as the rest of the world.

How's Prisca? She finished Uni yet?

I was thinking about getting one myself a few months ago.

If you've got your heart set on one Mark and by the sounds of it you have, then get one mate.

But make sure you post some pics of it when you do :D

well as for the range sport, seriously dont even bother with one!!!

i dont know how much it shares the same bits as the normal range rover but all i know is steffs dad bought a full spec range sport with the full dynamics package and every option ticked and they had it precisecly 9 days before it spent the next 5 weeks at range rover.

the air suspension kept leaking on one side, meaning that the car would collapse to the left when the compressor was not running.

They replaced the whole lot twice now and its still not perfect.

The doors kept unlocking and when you were away from it. meaning you would come back from shopping to have everything unlocked!

lights wouldnt go off, which eventualy lead to a big puff of smoke and a small flame coming from within the engine bay..... no fun at all for over £60k

and according to my re-trimmer the leather is awful and cheap and similar grade to mondeo leather!!! The car is shamefully put together and i have since seen 3 new vogues in steffs dads breakers yard where they have decided to go up in flames!!!

but i must say that when its running its the nuts! smooth and graceful.

and there is nothing quite like being in a 4x4....

A customer of my dad had one, and got rid of it just before the warranty expired. Over the course of 3 years he had over £18,000 worth of work done under warranty...
