Hi there.

The other day I noticed that I have no headlights working. Sidelights are working fine, bottom fog lights are working alright but as for main headlights, nothing. The auto setting seems to be working fine as the lights on the dash and centre facia seem to come in accordance with the daylight decreasing. The lights still flash properly when the stalk is pulled towards me but don't come on when pushed away. The headlight washer isn't worlking as well and neither is the rear fog lights unless I have the front ones on. I've already tried replacing the relay but no joy. I've also checked the fuses but they all seem to be fine.

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions??

Thanx folks....

Is it just dipped beam that's not working? And do the lights come with the manual switch?

Yes. I'm having to run about at night with just the sidelights on and my bottom front fog lights which I hate doing.

The lights don't come on with the manual switch. Only the sidelights come on.

Sounds like a fuse for dipped beam has blown to me or a faulty relay, can't help with the exact location but would guess that would be in the owners manual. Without dipped beam the rear fogs won't work or the headlamp washers.

AFAIK there are 3 fuse boxes, one under that bonnet and one in each footwell.

Not a great deal of help i'm afraid just need to get back into the fuse boxes. Hopefully someone will come along who knows more.

It is possible that both bulb filaments have failed at the same time. I know it sounds unusual but it happened to me once in my old Scimitar. Both bulbs had failed at the same time. It is possible the the surge created by the failure of one can knock out the other one. Try changing one of them before pulling the car wiring to bits !

I think my dual failure may have occured after a spell of driving on a section of heavily cobbled street a few days earlier so if you have been on cobbles somewhere recently I would definitely suspect a bulb !

Tried changing the bulbs but no joy. Once again I have looked at the fuses but nothing seems to be blown. The main headlight relay in the fuse box under the bonnet ( the light blue one) has also been changed but still nothing. I'm starting to run out of ideas!!!! Does anyone have any kind of wiring diagram so I can check the wiring from the switch to the headlights?? Does anyone have any other ideas that may help??

Some fuses looks ok but is in fact blown. So change it all just in case and make really sure you check the right one.

Once again checked through all fuses and all are OK.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you want to do it yourself, then get a multimeter and you are having to test for voltage at the various points ie start at the bulb socket and then the relay, then check if the relay is getting a trigger from the stalk etc

or take it to the garage

Thanks

I admire your optimism Charlotte.  Apart from not coming back on his original post, Mark’s last post seems to have been in 2013.

Perhaps he found an easier way to solve the problem - he sold it!

If the solutions already suggested haven’t resolved it, then I’d be inclined to find an auto electrician and spend the money rather than lose any more time.  I see that you have taken it to a garage, but was it a Lexus dealer?  Sometimes these kind of faults can be model specific.

In any case, auto electricians are specialists and may be more experienced at fault diagnosis than the average garage mechanic.
