I have had a new UK GS300 SE-L (with Mark Levinson stereo) for a couple of days extended test drive.

I have read on american owners sites that the car will play DVDs simply by inserting them into the in dash changer when the car is in Park with the handbrake on.

Unfortunately this does not seem to work in the car I have been given (I have tried R1, R2 DVDs).

Does anyone know if it should work, if it is disabled in the UK and if it can be enabled?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I've been looking into this myself....

It appears that Lexus in their infinite wisdom have 'knobbled' DVD play on the GS300 in the UK!

My question is WHY ?? :tsktsk: :tsktsk: . It's not down to European legislation as Mercedes COMAND units will happily play DVD's on their 7" screens without any modification in this country.

Also, Gs 300's supplied in the States will play DVD's (so long as you're in park and the parking brake is engaged - which is fair enough).

So WHY, WHY , WHY do Lexus UK think they have to nanny us and not allow UK purchasers to watch films in their car !!???

Any plausable answers would be nice... Thanks

The Ed

You could even try Region 0 (or stuff you have recorded yourself) but I don't think it will make any difference.

The technology is there in the headunit but it has just been knobbled in the firmware :tsktsk:

If you could get hold of a hacked version of the firmware AND manage to update it (probably via a DVD popped into the Sat Nav drive in the Glove Box) then you might be able to overcome it but of course you would invalidate your warranty !
