Hi,

I recently drove the car hard for a while and noticed that now when the car has been driven for 15-25 mins (hard ie rev to 4000 rpm), that changing from 1st to 2nd is very hard and requires a lot of force. It just does not want to go into 2nd gear. When I drive the car and rev below 3000 rpm its fine. But whenever I go above 3000rpm after 10-20 mins the problem comes back, sometimes you can hear the gears grinding as I am really forcing it into 2nd. I am really P :tsktsk: ed off with this, can anything be done to rectify this, please HELP!. By the way I have changed the gearbox oil.

Did it do it before you changed the gearbox oil?

The clunkiness from 1st to 2nd was bad before I changed the oil and then was better after the oil change. But later I start testing the car by reving higher, and thus after a while when driving for 15-20 mins hard (4000- 5000rpm) the car did not want to go into 2nd smoothly even when changing gears slowly. It was resisting and was very hard to change and sometimes you could hear the grind of the gear cog. Shaking the gears in neutral helped to relax the change from 1st to 2nd but was still resisting.

This sounds almost exactly the same as my car i havent got a clue what it is but if anyone knows a solution i would be very greatful.

Cheers Elliott

i get the same prob mate.  The annoying thing is that it slows the driving down and is a nuisance having to go through neutral first.

Worse still is when the weather aint too warm.  what kind of miles has your car done???

My car has done 60,000

Have you had a dealer look at the problem?

When you say it's difficult to get in guys are you referriing to the notchiness or just it won't go in? I have to admit I've missed this gear change three or four times now and had the grinding, I'm on the short shifter though and think I've just been excited and let off the clutch too soon?

Don't know if the synchro mesh would have anything to do with this? Chris Shipley mentioned that can wear if you leave you hand on the gear knob all the time? Does that sound like how you guys drive?

I had this problem but only very slightly on my last IS200 se, but then again that car was burning oil badly so it was prob thrashed a bit before I got it!

I would be interested in hearing solutions to this also though as my current gear box will prob take a bit of a pounding with the turbo going in! :shifty:

The gear will not go in unless forced and its not smooth. Notchiness is gone when the car is warm, but when dirven hard (4000-5000rpm), the car does NOT like going into 2nd gear from 1st.
