Mat,

I cannot see too clearly on my laptop screen, but the score marks seem to go very near the lip of the bore. IF this is the case then surely the plot thickens.

On the other hand if the circlip was missing or badly fitted and the gudgeon pin moved, AND assuming the the distance to the bore is greater than the width of the bearing in the piston then the gudgeon pin would be supported on only one side of the piston. This would cause the piston to twist and due to the enormous friction between the piston and the bore would cause a failure at the weakest point.

Like I said earlier I thought the scores go to the top of the liner which is odd.

Also that the crack appears to have originated from the skirt, consistent with your twisting theory mate.

which goes back to the "walking" pin, id say the circlip has been pushed out and trapped below, or on the bottom rings, and thats why the score goes near to the top of the cylinder

is it safe to assume that the crack was on the same side of the piston as the scores ?

bit chicken and egg really isn't it did it crack to release the circlip or did the circlip releasing cause the crack

just like the rest of the guys have said..........................

by the looks off it the circlip has come off! and with that the pin as started to move ...........as soon as the pin worked its way out this would have put all the "load" on one side of the piston, ...................

IMHO.........this comes down to bad installation off the piston's i would say.........i think you need to take this up with who did the installation ................ and not the guy who SOLD you them ;)

it's surprising to see that the circlip has been re-fitted, did the original garage do the stripdown after the failure, it might be a good idea to have that circlip tested too to see if it is an exact match for the others, i'm not suggesting that the garage you used is in any way 'dodgy' but a distracted fitter forgetting to fit a circlip could explain a lot. Even if this is the case, i do see the point of your post.
