Help With Renault Espace Bonnet Cable ?

A friend of mine has a problem with her Espace the bonnet release cable has snapped and I had a look at trying to replace it, we have a brand new cable but Cannot get the old one out, its a 95 model the cable goes behind the steering column thru the firewall and into the engine but it seems to be almost impossible to see it and even harder to get hands into it.

Has anyone ever replaced one? if so do you have any tips?

Im having to replace the whole cable as the outter sheath on the original is damaged so its not just a case of threading the new steel cable thru the old sheath :(

She doesnt have a haynes manual but if anyone has one perhaps there's something in there ?
