How long should GS front brake discs last?

At 35k my dealer said they needed replacing as they had worn down (not scored). I told them to replace under warranty and they said that they were wearing items and not covered. I word in Lexus' ear and they were replaced under warranty.

I have an Accord with over 100k on the originals. Why don't the Lexus ones last as long?

Was your Accord an Auto ?

Basically automatic cars wear brakes out far quicker than manuals the brakes tend to be used a lot more, plus your GS300 is a lot heavier than an Accord and takes more stopping power

Hi Chris,

Yes, the Accord is auto. I cannot remember even having a car that needed new discs in 35k miles. The dealer said it was par for the course.

GS300 discs are notorious for warping. The fact that Lexus agreed to replace them under warranty means that they were not over their wear limit - so I'm guessing they must have been warped, rather than worn.

I've read that the most common cause for warping is overtightening of the wheel nuts - I always ask dealers and tyre fitters NOT to use an air gun, and carry a torque wrench in the car the manually tighten the nuts - seems to have helped.

Having said that - I would have thought you'd get much more than 35K out of a set of discs.
