How to use a voltage detector - advice please.

I've bought a Multivao voltage detector and (pathetic of me, I know) would just like to check what to do before I try it.

It seems that I should stick it in the cigarette lighter, start the car without my foot on the brake, and it should display a number, hopefully over 12?

If that is correct, (I'm aware I must get into "ready" mode asap) do I then put my foot on the brake and press start again?

Any thoughts/advice/idiot-proof instructions gratefully received.
