Getting tyres from, and fitted by, dealers.

I've heard a couple of horror stories about the TPMS sensors being broken and/or calibration problems when an independent tyre place has been used, so I was thinking of getting the dealer to do them but what's the procedure?

• Do dealers have a limited range and you can only choose from those, or can you say that you want x,y, or z even though the dealer doesn't stock them?
• Do dealers source them for you and have them delivered to the workshop, or do you have to source them yourself and take them to the workshop yourself?

My first choice would be Goodyear Vector 4Seasons, closely followed by Michelin Cross Climates, but the 20" wheels seem to limit choice somewhat.

When I enquired about having CC2 fitted my dealer spent ages hunting around for stock, there was none in the UK. They suggested various others and were open to any I requested but I went with ATS in the end.

I'm not 100% sure every dealer fits tyres themselves or simply farms it out. Either way, in my mind, the dealer takes full responsibility for the work, so even if they don't fit themselves in their own workshop, any issues would be resolved through them. My dealer also price matched, this was a couple of years back ...

My experience: I told the dealer the tyres I wanted and asked for a price which I compared with the best online price I could get (have followed this procedure for years) and they couldn't get close to the online price.  In one instance I was told that the dealer couldn't get it for the online price!  Then purchased the tyres I wanted at the best price I could get, had the tyres delivered to me, made an appointment and had the tyres fitted and balanced at the dealer, at cost.  It does mean that I pay for the fitting/balancing twice (as online tyres price includes fitting) but I know the tyres are good and good price and they are fitted by the dealer so they know how to deal with the TPMS sensors.  Have done this several times and have not been refused but then the dealer/s look after my car anyway.

I have used a couple of dealers for tyres (not Lexus).

Just ask them for a price for your chosen tyre. Some will do a price match too which is good.

Had 4 seasons fitted all round last week at Costco for £500 with promotion, just in time it appears from forecast 🤯

Yes, last time I looked at Costco if you buy 4 tyres you get £100.  Their prices vary: last time I found a better price online elsewhere, time before Costco had best price so do your research.

When my car was last in for a service and MOT,the tracking was badly out and I needed 2 new rears.They had Bridgestones in stock but I wanted Continentals.They quoted within a pound or two of Blackcircles for the same tyre,so I used the dealer.Many of them will price match.

Preston lexus will source your choice of tyres for you and fit them. There is a bit of a premium, but for me worth it as they're responsible for any wheel or tpms damage. Had them do it for mine when brand new as I wanted cross climates.

I asked recently and they said they didn't have (or weren't able to provide) the tyres i enquired about (some michelin primacy), and I was surprised they didn't.

This month it's Michelin eg CC'S, and I like the fact it includes everything including disposal so no additional surprises. Oh and 2% for exec cards. 😊

Tyre fitting companies/ outlets are more than used to TPMS in wheels as “most” brands fit them. 

Had tyres fitted by Costco & others without a moments thought about TMPS issues.

Why would you need to take your car the Lexus to have tyres fitted (?) when its odds on that they will simple take it to a tyre fitting outfit to have that done (at your expense)

Hi Herbie,

As you’ve gathered from the other responses, you don’t need to use a main dealer for tyres, I have CC2’s fitted and I’ve predominantly used Protyre, Asda tyres or Blackcircle tyre’s depending on the best deal at the time and just choose a local fitting place to complete the work.

The most important part of the work to protect your TPMS valves, regardless of who you choose to fit them, is to get them to puncture the tyres rather than let the air out through the valve itself as this is what can fubar the TPMS valve.

If you’ve ever put your finger tip on the end of a cycle pump and then pumped the plunger, invariably the air passing over your finger will create heat and  ‘burn’ your finger, it’s this heat dissipation through the valve as the air escapes which can fry the electrical components in the valve not the actual tyre being swapped, some fitters get a bit defensive when you ask them to do this but I always politely insist and it’s never been a problem.

I hope that goes some way to reassure you when making your tyre choice.

Think and have Heard the dealers will negotiate price to get the business Herb...And best to get this done As The TPMS sensors will be correctly Tuned to Your Vehicle..Lots of garages will tell you They can do it  But is Dependant on there Equipment and Expertise..!!! Like Mitchelin Primacy tyres Herb But I Suppose it depends on the Price..!!!

Read this thread for a tpms horror story 

it might be cheaper to buy from an independent,  however when, in this case, four previously working tmps units suddenly fail after a tyre change and the garage concerned deny any responsibility, it suddenly gets a lot more expensive......not to mention the time and hassle involved in putting it right
