RZ450e Takumi Really Poor Range

Recommended Posts

Hi, looking for some advice! I have a 2023 450e Takumi that I took delivery of in Sept 24.

The car has the range update applied but the car is incredibly stubborn and the range will not increase beyond 2.5 Miles/KwH. We took the car on a road trip to York and back which is approximately 170 miles each way (90% M1 from J13 north).

We left at 100% with the car suggesting 171 miles range in normal mode with ac off and everything that could be set to range, set that way without selecting range mode as that limits the speed to 63 miles per hour!

The first part of the drive was 133.5m and the Lexus app rated it at 85 out of 100 but when we stopped we only had 29 miles of range with an average speed of 59!

id love to hear any advice on what I’m doing wrong or what I can change in the car because from what I’ve read with the update I should be doing much better! Or if that’s a reasonable range.

Thanks for reading!

Going on others experience I think you did well. Range may improve in warmer weather. If you're after range though it's definitely not the correct car for your use-case...

I say enjoy it for the luxury and hopefully reliability along with a great ownership

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

We changed from an eGolf to this so it’s actually a pretty decent improvement in range!

However I thought I’d get closer to 200 per charge so it’s a little frustrating but 99% of the time this will do no more than 30 miles a day so it’s not a problem generally and I guess for the longer runs I’ll just plan on more frequent motorway stops!

As the temperature are still fairly mild it is unusual that at 100% with all ac off the range starts at 175.  Have you recently done a lot of high speed trips ?  Most people on here are starting with 200+ and recently I was getting 230 after local driving.

Hi, thanks for your reply. When the car was delivered it showed 202 at 100% but since then it just slowly decreased over time, which may be reasonable given the amount of roundabouts and 70mph dual carriageways where I live.

that is why I had high hopes that the car would perform better than the predicted range at the start, but it was almost perfectly accurate! Even on the return journey I didn’t do better than 2.5 per mile!

any suggestions on things I can check to make sure are off, or things I might have missed?

Figures sound about right. Lexus has a calculator on their website to give suggested range…

Motorway driving in an EV is one of the least efficient for the motors and Battery usage - essentially the opposite of diesel and ICE where you’d expect your best MPG.

Just got back from my regular 400 mile round trip to London area. Approx. 300 miles motorway  and 100 mile across country. Cruise set to 70 mph on motorway and ambient temp between 16-18 deg c. Got overall 3.2 miles/kwh which is lower than my usual average but still good.

Problem is EVs don’t really like motorways. They are the opposite of what we have all been used to with ICE cars. Regenerative braking (ensure you always set to max on LH paddle) tops the Battery up and you don’t get much of this on motorways. I think you need more miles to make judgement, for instance I am getting 3.2 miles pkw with mixed driving including motorways so this should be achievable if you definitely have the software update. On a full charge mine shows 251 miles of range and it’s a Premium Plus with the 20” wheels so you should be getting close to this also.

Tbh id ask for a refund or another car, surely their has to be some accuracy and honesty from the Manufacturer …this model has been mooted to get 250 miles .

otherise how are we to have confidence in buying an electric car, I have a UXE Takumi, I get 3.2 KW and about 180 miles….but i never put the heating on , as this hammers the capacity 🙃
