Hi all,

New poster with a new Lexus NX450+ 👋

I scoured these forums and can see people with similar issues but no simple resoloution, so far..

I have a USB drive loaded with albums that I took out of my Mitsubishi Outlander (and plays with no issue) but won't play in the Lexus.

It's a Kingston 8gb drive, formated to FAT32 and only files in the root directory.

I've tried every file format that Lexus claims to recognise, MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, & OGG, non will play.

I've checked the tags are correct and also tried a Sandisk drive also.

The drive itself is recognised but the files list as 'uknkown' and an error message 'no music files found' pops up.

Surely it shouldn't be this hard to play a few songs!!

Please help, i'm rapidly losing what little hair I have left!

Thanks.

Agreed Lexus is somewhat idiosyncratic over what it's prepared to play from USB devices.

I have Sandisk 16GB drive, formatted to FAT32, but don't have any music files in the root directory, only folders, and NO sub-folders. Folders are either for album titles, or a genre, and files within as required, e.g.

E:\Fleetwood Mac - Rumours>dir
Volume in drive E is Music
 Volume Serial Number is D449-A077

Directory of E:\Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

08/01/2020  19:56    <DIR>          .
08/01/2020  19:56    <DIR>          ..

08/01/2020  19:56         4,106,368 02 Dreams.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         2,142,336 03 Never Going Back Again.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         3,082,368 04 Don't Stop.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         3,498,112 05 Go Your Own Way.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         3,203,200 06 Songbird.mp3

08/01/2020  19:56         3,444,864 08 You Make Loving Fun.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         3,133,568 09 I Don't Want To Know.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         3,678,336 10 Oh Daddy.mp3
08/01/2020  19:56         4,681,856 11 Gold Dust Woman.mp3
              11 File(s)     37,932,416 bytes
               2 Dir(s)  12,972,513,280 bytes free

Note track file names start with a number, since tracks get played alphabetically. I've also stuck to MP3 format, and MP3 tags are recognised, including cover images.

There may be other layout combinations, but this one works for me.

Still waiting for my NX.... 😞

Out of interest, did this work?  Issue resolved (as I'd like to play some old fav tracks from a USB drive)?

Thx for any help.

David, might the change in economy that you are noticing be due to the on-board computer being reset from the disconnected battery?

Previously I expect you were seeing accumulated average mpg over many miles/days.

Although when the battery is disconnected the ECU goes through a relearn process, so maybe you are actually seeing an improvement.

With my inconclusive and contradictory reply, I'll duck out and go for a lie down!

My 450h+ Takumi arrived mid July minus second fob, wheel bolts, manuals and towbar (which has now been fitted at the main dealer).

No updates at all on the key fob or locking wheel bolts😬

Download the Rufus utility, just go to Google and search for, Rufus disc drive utility at Rufus.ie and reformat your SanDisk drive. If you have your music files on this drive already, just move them onto your desktop and drag and drop them back after you've reformatted it, it's very easy to do. Follow the instructions (don't check the box to make it a rebootable drive) you just want it to store music and films.

There is an online tutorial which makes it even easier to follow.

Lexus I think says you can only have a max drive size of 32gb but mine is 256mb and I have loads of music and films on it. (You can only view films when stationary obviously). Hope this helps.

I'm being naughty here as I only picked up my car yesterday and haven't had a full chance to peruse the manual, but.

In which USB port does a music memory stick plug into, A or C and once there where do I go in the infotainment screen to find the files that are on it ? I've been having a play around with settings today, but I couldn't find how to do this.

It's early days but i'm not finding the Lexus system as intuitive as my previous Hyundai.

As a for instance; during my playing about I found a way to change the style of the main dashboard, but I'm blowed if I could find it again later on !!

The downloadable manuals are your friends here....put them both on a tablet and sit in the car with them open.....something to read in the evenings too.  Bookmark the index for easy reference

I prefer reading them on the Kindle app, but any pdf reader will do

Hi Jim and thankyou for your advice.

Just a few minutes ago I wrote and posted  this in my introduction thread.  Another part of this is that I'm awful at learning from reading, I just coudn't swot for exams at school, which is why I was asked to leave at age 15. I can learn things from reading, but usually I learn fro poking about and repetition - I'll get there in the end.

Perhaps I should have written this in my introduction, but it does involve baring ones soul a little, which I'm not prone to usually, But it's my hope that I will keep my Lexus for a while, so I'll be involved in this forum as a matter of course.

Very late in my life I discovered that I have Aspergers (a form of autism).  Apart from it being a lightbulb moment, it means that my brain has different wiring to the majority of folks, a part of which means that I can be very blunt and forthright e.g. I don't suffer fools easily and can appear rude.

It could be construed that I shouldn't be on a public forum, but I have a need to ask questions like anyone else and I feel (and have proven in the past) that I often have a helpful input in this situation.

This is not an excuse for rudeness, but it is a reason and so I apologise in advance if I upset anyone. I'd like to say it's not intentional, but sometimes it is because there are people on the planet who shouldn't be allowed out without a carer.

Feel free to tell me take a hike if this is inappropriate and thankyou for the welcomes, help and advice so far.👍

I am a great believer in saying what I think, so I'm glad to hear you feel the same. I don't think you will find too many people on here with a thin skin.

Kudos for your post above, I'm sure it was hard to compose.....

It's the USB A port.

Here are the instructions on how to play music from the memory stick (click on each image below to enlarge it):-

As it's only an 8GB flash drive... do you not have a smartphone (Iphone or Android) that the music could be loaded onto?

In terms of the issue... it's really the usual suggestions: check a different flash drive to see if it's a problem with the drive; and ideally try connecting a phone via USB cable to see if it connects (eliminating problems with the Lexus USB A port).

I would also double check that the 8GB drive is formatted correctly (per instructions shared by others, above). Do note that formatting a drive wipes the contents - so ensure you've copied your music onto your PC first, so you can then copy it back across!

Otherwise, I would try loading on only a few music files at a time - it may be long file names or special characters (anything other than letters and numbers) are causing a problem.

I don't know why you assume it's an 8GB drive, it's actually a 64 GB drive and holds pretty much my whole music collection.

I haven't read through much of the manual yet, maybe 64GB is too big to handle ?

Tried another memory stick of 8 GB and it works, so no idea at present why the other one won't work ! 😔

I think Lexus only allow drives upto 32gb which is quite small. The way round it is to reformat your 64gb memory stick using the Rufus utility as I've described in this conversation earlier. My SanDisk memory drive is 256mb and holds a large amount of music and films and once formatted you will see the drive appear in the menu on the main screen when you select Source.  Hope this helps.

....p s. Drag your files off temporarily onto your computer desk top before you reformat it. Drag and drop them back once you've completed the Rufus reformat.

Thankyou Colin, that's very informative.

I'll give this some thought before attempting it as I don't listen to music in the car much nowadays.

You might wonder why I'm bothering, but it will represent a challenge in my quieter moments, so thanks again.

Sounds like a problem with that drive, either the drive itself or the way it is formatting. Like Colin I have used a bigger drive (128Gb) with no issues, although I'm currently  using  android auto for music and navigation from my phone. If you down that route, try magicearth for navigation,  I prefer it to Waze or Google maps

Thanks for your help guys but I've given up on this now - too many hoops to jump through and since I hardly ever listen to music in the car now, it isn't worth the trouble.

I did offload the music onto the computer and did a normal format first, but reloading the music was at a snails pace, so I gave up.

Maybe I'll revisit this one day when I'm bored.

Apologies, got you confused with the thread starter GThorpe who has the 8gb drive!

A slow transfer back to the drive probably indicates you have a slow flash drive. Performance varies greatly and also ensure you use the fastest USB ports on your computer (not all USB ports are created equally).

I have now loaded my music onto another 64Gb drive that I formatted to ex fat.

Still no joy, so I will now cease trying - I think 😉
