Mine's done 180k miles now and I don't use it much but it hasn't been serviced for a couple of years.  Is there a schedule I could print out for a local garage to use?  I see there's a range of service kits on eBay ranging from about £80 to £150.  I know he won't be able to do anything with the hybrid system, but is there anything over and above oil and air filter changes that would be essential?

Ah - ok thanks - so it looks like if I add in brake fluid change and diff oil change that should be ok for another 10k miles

Thanks

Spark Plugs, Coolant, Cabin Filter - have these been changed at the recommended intervals?

The spark plugs is quite a big job I believe as lots of parts to remove to gain access.

Diff fluid (rear motor transaxle assembly) is lifetime, as is the transmission. Obviously you can do it if you wish. Both use WS transmission fluid.

Standard schedule is based on age / mileage (whichever occurs first):

Oil and filter change every 1 year / 10k miles

Brake fluid every 2 years/ 20k miles

Cabin filter every 2 years/ 20k miles

Air filter every 4 years/ 40k miles

Spark plugs every 60k miles (no age interval)

Engine coolant at 10 years / 100k miles (and then every 5 years / 50k miles)

Inverter coolant at 10 years / 100k miles (and then every 5 years / 50k miles)

Timing belt every 10 years / 100k miles

Im at 140k and have no record of ever having had the spark plugs changed. I've done them previously on other and never noticed any difference, would be interested to hear real world experience of actual benefits.

Personally I wouldn't go chasing work. At the age they are, something relatively minor could make the car a write off repair wise. Instead I'd keep up the basics but increase the oil change frequency to every 4-5k miles, 6 months.

All filters, coolant if it needs a refresh. Brake fluid bleed you need the software, but consider it. Also get wheels off, examine the discs and pads and 100% grease the slider pins. Check the easy repair items, like boots on the drop links etc

All service items are preventative - you shouldn't notice any difference before and after a service. Service at a convenient time before any degradation occurs to prevent emergency repairs at an inconvenient time.

WRT plugs, they wear with use, which increases the electrode gap, and you get to a point where you will develop poor running, increased mpg and the potential for cat damage if all fuel isn't combusted in the cylinder. For a hybrid, where the engine doesn't run as much as a conventional petrol vehicle, I'd suggest a 100k miles interval would be fine with iridium based plugs (outside of a warranty period) - going beyond that and you also run the risk of the plugs seizing in the engine which may increase time & effort required to change them when needed.

I see Care Care Nut recommends 120,000 mile intervals for iridium spark plugs.

Lexus did a big service on my RX 450h a while back, which included the spark plug replacement alongside inverter coolant, engine coolant and brake fluid replacement. £825 total. The coolant is good for 50,000 miles, the brake fluid 2 years and Lexus (UK) say the plugs are good for 60,000.

I can do a full service on the car for around £100 using genuine Lexus filters, etc. and Smith and Allen oil that is the correct grade. If I pay Lexus another £250 to do the inverter coolant, engine coolant and brake fluid replacement I’ve saved £475 by leaving the plugs in place.

It really is a case of deciding at the time what to do when the time comes.

In 2022 at the first full service on my lovely 2020 Volvo S60 T5 the Volvo garage insisted on changing the spark plugs ( £50 each ). I complained that the car had only done 5800 miles and ran perfectly. They said that if I don't get them changed it will void the warranty ( just under 1 year to go from the 3 yr original ). What a rip-off. Even Lexus are looking at about 60K miles I believe.  BTW Volvo full service = £750, and it is only a 2 litre turbo 4 cylinder. Plus the Volvo garage was awful even though the car was great, so unfortunately Volvo goes on the list of cars to avoid.

Cowboys. Unfortunately the days of Volvo dealers putting customers first have long gone since the brand became more of a volume producer and dealerships were dished out to the usual suspects. Something had to change at Volvo to survive but as always, to the detriment of the customer.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. The dealer that we bought the car from was closed and the business transferred to a new site run by a nation-wide concession. It went down hill from there on.

Volvo were so proud of the longevity of their cars (like Saab) but it's no business plan is it?
