I think I opened up that topic a little while back. Could just be a rumour , but the underlying revenue issue and the impact of EV's tends to suggest there may be something to it.

In the event they go down this road then how it impacts any of us will be the devil in the details of how they implement it. For example, if they make it an additional charge over and above existing road tax that could well be very different from the outcome if they make it a replacement for the existing road tax system. Regardless, one suspects the losers will far exceed the few winners.

There Would be a Public Uprising If this Was ever Implemented..Good Grief They're in Enough Trouble...!!! None of this was In There Manifesto But Then Neither was The Changes to The Winter Fuel Allowance...Batman And Robin Ought To Give Just a Little Scientific Thought To all These proposed Changes And more importantly Public Reaction...Or Is it Time to Give them The Circus Hat....!!!!!!

Charging per mile driven is an incredibly bad idea when done bluntly as proposed. I'll keep politics out of this. The whole proposed shift to EVs was supposidly about being green (I know, don't get me started on that one). The way fuel tax was added per liter was also ostensibly the same. Add to those two that road tax is based on CO2 output. So all the policies are taxing the heavier more polluting cars more, while lighter more efficient cars less. Now apply a per mile to all cars, yes there are proposals for higher brackets for vans and HGVs, and you have given zero incentive for manufacturers to produce more efficient cars or for the average consumer to look for efficiency. If you lump all cars into one category that would mean if I were to barrell down the motorway in a 5 ton behemoth (e.g. hummer EV, or for europe/UK their nearly 3 ton EV SUVs) or a sub 2 ton efficient EV I would pay the same per mile?! How stupid is that?
