Is a Lexus good for me?

Hi folks

New member here.  I think I am about to purchase a 2022/23 NX450+ but am seeking a little reassurance from you good folks here.

Typically I buy a car nearly new and run it until it dies.  Over the years the mileage at "death" is getting higher and higher. Our 2014 CR-V is sitting at 133k miles and has at least 2 years left in it however we now need an automatic as my wife has had a stroke.  The CR-V has been the cheapest car we have ever own as far as running costs and reliability is concerned.  We had to replace a sensor in the fuel system for £99.  Otherwise any costs have been servicing and consumables.

We are 60/61 so whilst I don't see this as out last car it may have to last until we are in our 70s.

So my question to you all is the NX likely to live up to the CR-V in reliability and longevity?

I can't specifically speak of the NX (I have an RX) but just look at how many Prius Taxis are out there.

Both Prius and RX have many examples of 200 to 300k and beyond.

Typically lexuses tend to be reliable. However newer cars these days come packed to the brim with electronics which have a higher chance of failing vs simpler cars from even a decade ago. Even brands like honda that made ultra reliable cars seem to be having reliablity issues lately. So while a newer Lexus may not leave you stranded by the side of the road, the long term ownership experience may not be as niggle free as you've been used to.

Thanks guys.  I remember when we got the CR-V I was disappointed with the lack of gadgets/gizmos.  Maybe that was a bonus?

 

The alternative to the NX is a Skoda Kodiaq which is not a hybrid and has less electronics.  I'd get slightly newer for £4k less.

I think you’ll find the Skoda will have a DSG automated transmission if you require an automatic. I’m no expert but I would suggest you do some reading regarding the durability of these systems on other forums.

Doesn't seem to be an issue generally.

I've had a DSG gearbox on previous VW group cars and they need oil  (filter) change at 40k or 4 years. 

The previous NX was one of the most reliable second hand cars on the recent What car reliability survey. Hopefulloy this will carry forward into the latest NX.

Perhaps a slightly older 2016 NX might serve you well. I remember reading on this forum about people with the newer NXs complaining about suspension bushings wearing prematurely and lexus washing their hands off it citing normal wear. Where as i have not heard many complaints or issues from older NX users. Also i think 2017 onwards NX cars are susceptible to the CAN bus theft which can potentially affect insurance costs.

Yes yes yes. I am on my fourth Lexus (an RZ). In between I have owned various Mercedes/Jaguar/BMW etc and I can honestly say Lexus beats them all. I have never had a single problem with any of the 4 and the hybrid power trains are so economical to run. I would book a test drive if you haven’t already to make sure it suits you but other than that I don’t think you would regret anything.
