Radar runflats .

Recommended Posts

I have just noticed the rear axle has a new Radar runflat tyre on one side and a Bridgestone Touranzo on the other which has plenty of tread left, my question is it legal to have a  different make of runflats on the same axle

Would insurance company refuse to pay out in a accident  ?

Thanks Robert

It's legal to have different makes of tyre on the same axle, you can even mix runflats and non runflats if you want, although not advisable. The only legal requirement is that they are both radials.

As long as they are the correct size and speed rating you should be ok, although I wouldn't want them on my car, I'm very fussy about tyres and like a matched set of premium ones. I use Black Circles for tyres so I can choose exactly the ones I want.

Michelin thinks that it's illegal.

But really, what are they doing putting budget tyres on a car that's only 3 years old anyway?

I think you need to go back and insist on a new Bridgestone Touranzo to replace the Radar.

That is incorrect - possibly they have taken that from another country where it is true.

Provided the sizes are the same, and the structure is the same on an axle (i.e. both cross-ply or both radial) then you can mix. You can even mix run-flat and conventional. None of this is recommended as you compromise handling in an extreme situation, but illegal it is not and you see many vehicles with odd tyres on them.

Hmmm, just as I thought, some of the Michelin link above is not entirely correct. Sort of makes a mockery when it is according to Michelin illegal to therefore use a space saver wheel!

Personally, I would say to the op, leave as is and, no, your insurance company should not deny cover.

Just for good measure, there is also growing debate on where you fit 2 new tyres, front or rear. An argument I had with ATS who consistently failed me as a leased driver.
