Greetings all, new here. Bought  my first lexus last week, 06 gs450h, all brilliant until last night. Driving up my street and lost power, check hybrid system warning came on. Had to roll car back and leave at a kind neighbours space. Back this morning and disconnected Battery for a while. After reconnecting, warning still there and car sounded like a tractor, but managed to slowly(very little power) drive it uphill to my house. Don't want to start it again until I know what's wrong. Hoping some of you fine folk can assist me 🙏

The codes need to be read from the OBD port otherwise it's just guess work.

Was told today the codes for camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor came up, along with hybrid system. I'm assuming the hybrid system will appear anyway if there's a fault with the engine??

The engine was making a loud clickety noise when started, and won't start at all now. Does this sound like the timing chain has gone? 😪

You think "more likely". I still haven't had it verified as timing chain yet, just an 'expert' opinion. Codes for crankshaft and camshaft are there. Still waiting for a mechanic to take job on. All say too busy. Is your opinion an easy repair?

Vvt I wasn't used in Lexus until 2007 I read. But yeah, valves are probably wrecked anyway

Did you but from a dealer or private, if a dealer you do have legal rights under Consumer Protection law.

The clicking sounds might be a failed fuel pump.

I hope you're right. But, that would hardly throw up the cam and crankshaft sensors.

I bought it from a dealer. You're correct, I have 30 days for a possible refund, or after 30 days he should cover cost of repair

In that case I wouldn’t bother trying to find a mechanic to “take it on” I would be calling the dealer and no one else, if someone else takes a look first the dealer then has a defence “ You’ve invalidated your warranty by letting a third party look at the car”

Get onto the dealer, explain the situation in simple terms, i.e car won’t start and then ask how they would like to proceed in other words come and collect it.

They have one chance to repair then refund.

Thanks for advice. It's a little awkward as I'm in northern ireland and I went to London to buy car, also I didn't take a warranty, I'm only armed armed with consumer rights

All Lexus vehicles in the UK have used some form of VVT since approximately 1998. The GS450h engine has dual VVT-i.

If the chain has gone then you would likely have piston and/or valve damage, plus whatever damage the chain itself may cause to the engine casing and ancillaries. Hopefully this isn't the case. The chain is prone to stretching beyond what the tensioner can accommodate so you may get chain rattle, possibly to the point where it could jump a tooth but it rarely just snaps.

Consumer rights are better than a warranty.  Car dealers only offer six month warranties to try to fob you off if there's a problem.  Ring the dealer, and follow up with a recorded delivery letter setting out the problem straight away. Time is of the essence!

Sorry to be so harsh.

Phil, I am a bit worried about your profile picture. It's not Donald Trump is it?
