Key Fob not locking/unlocking

As a consequence of my 12v Battery going flat twice in two months I found that the vehicle would not lock, and the dealership could not fit me in until 8th November, a mere 3 weeks away. Almost in desperation I went online and found a partial answer, which at least secures my car. 

If your key fob isn't working (either of them) then there may be a need to re-set it (assuming fuses etc check out OK). The trick I found online is straightforward, and has worked for me. All You need to do is hold down the unlock button for five seconds, release it, and then hold down the lock button for five seconds and release it. After that You should be able to use Your fob to press unlock and open the doors. This tip is four years old so it seems to be a longstanding problem, although new to me after a mere fifty years of driving 😞

What the trick did not fix however, is the wing mirrors which don't move with the lock/unlock.

I am sure I read somewhere you need to hold the fob next to the start button and press start after changing the Battery

Have you ensured the mirror switch is either in the L or R position? If it’s in the ‘neutral’ position the mirrors will not fold.

As the Battery has gone flat, the mirrors have defaulted to not folding. You need to press the Auto switch again on the side of your door wing mirror adjustment buttons and it will function once again.

I was trying to sort out the keys, to register one for me & one for my wife (haven't managed it yet) but now, as Briar has said, key fob has to be right next to the power button to to get it into ready mode. What have I done?

Love the car, but hate all the unnecessary, distracting tech.

Have you tried replacing the key fob Battery? They seem to have a limited life even when the car is new, maybe a factory quality issue. They only cost about £2 each (CR2032) and are readily available from amazon in multi packs. I only saw one warning message from the car before the fob failed completely.

Yes, both batteries were replaced, locking & unlocking the car can still be done from a long distance away, so there's plenty of power in them, but they have to be right next to the power button to start it.

It's probably something I've done because I don't understand all the tech & the menus, thankfully I've only got the 'Urban' & not one with even more bells & whistles.

Sounds as if you have disabled smart entry?

I thought the smart entry was using your phone, I have never used/wanted that.

When I first had the car, the hybrid system would start if the key fob was anywhere inside the car, now it has to be right next to the power button.

Smart entry is touching the door handle to lock/unlock the vehicle and being able to press the start button without putting the key next to the button.

 

Digital key is using your phone - that is different to smart entry.

Thanks for that Colin, but as I said in an earlier post, I have the 'Urban' so it doesn't have smart entry. I am more than happy pressing a button on the key fob to unlock/lock the car.

It means that you switched off (inadvertently?) the “smart entry & start system” option in the car menu. Page 140 of the manual. Do not confuse with key Battery saving mode.

The smart entry & start system can be deactivated – page 556

Battery-saving mode can reduce the power consumption of electronic keys page 149.

If you switched of “smart entry & start system” in the car system menu, you need to have the key fob right next to the power button before pressing it.

Thank you for that, I have now found the smart entry & start switch & all is well with the world, well almost.
