TPMS light after 4 tyres replaced

Hi All,

It's been a while.

This is probably one for Bob.

I hade 4 tyres replaced today and the fitters couldn't get rid of the TPMS warning light and beeps which appeared despite following what they said is the Lexus reset process. I asked if the wheels were put refitted in their original position and they said they were. After a discussion which was getting heated I decided I was getting nowhere and left with the light on and the intermittent beeping.

Is this going to require a visit to Lexus to dianose the problem?

Regards Al

Are you sure the tyres are at the correct pressures? Have you tried resetting the system yourself, as shown in the handbook? A visit to the dealer might result in a FOC 5min reset?

Thanks Peter, I have checked the pressures they are all 33psi or above. I will check the handbook but I'm not sure the system can be reset on the SC.

Check someone hasn't inadvertently change the Main/second setting

No doubt the TPMS system can cause a lot of problems for owners especially the pre facelift models with the 4 coloured coded sensors and no reset switch. Batteries can now be up to 23 years old and some new aftermarket ones don’t seem to always work. Going back to Lexus can cost a lot of money to fix as well. It’s probably work investing in a cheap laptop running windows and buy a copy of Techstream and OBD cable from eBay or AliEpress and try and sort it out yourself. On preface lift you can disconnect the TMPS unit under the centre console and either just check the tyre pressures regularly yourself or fit an aftermarket TMPS system which are really cheap. I believe the TPMS system was originally fitted because the car was supplied with run flat tyres so owners would know the tyre was underflated when visually it could look OK.

Hi Glyn,

I should have said, it's a 2006 facelift model. I have been through the manual and it seems that the light comes on when the pressure drops a little and the beep I also get means there is no pressure at all. I don't think there is a reset button on the SC and I suspect the tyre fitter was, using the trip reset button when he was attempting to reset the TPMS system,

I'd like to know why it happened during the tyre swap and I'm wondering if the fitter damaged a sensor as Rayaan has suggested.

It would also be nice to know which wheel is causing the issue. Would the Techstream identify the suspect sensor?

Was the TPMS light on before the tyres were changed ?

if no then agree I suspect the tyre fitter had broken one .

There is a scan tool that can check each sensor but they are expensive so best use a main dealer to get them checked.

as far as I’m aware the 2006 SC430 has no reset button or a second set winter tyre choice…only the 2007 models onwards had that option .

Hi Alan,

I am not sure this is any help or not.

Tech stream TPMS

2002 - 2006 SC 430

REGISTER TRANSMITTER ID

a. Set the inflation pressure of all tires to the normal value.

b. Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester to DLC3.

c. Turn the ignition switch ON.

d. When registering to "Main":

1. Using the LEXUS hand-held tester, select the registration mode,"Main".

2. Forcibly transmit the transmitter IDs for all wheels.

HINT:

* The transmitter ID can be transmitted by rapidly reducing the tire inflation pressure.

* When rapidly reducing the pressure, loosen the valve core.

* Increase or decrease the tire inflation pressure by 20 kPa (0.2 kgf/sq.cm, 2.9 psi) or more within 15 sec. for each tire.

3. Using the LEXUS hand-held tester, make sure that the number of the registered ID is 4.

HINT: If the operation of step (d) does not complete within 5 min., it will return to the normal operation mode. Also, if the number of the registered ID is less than 4 after 5 min. has elapsed, turning on the ignition switch will make the tire pressure warning light light up for 3 sec., go out for 0.5 sec., then up again and remain ON in the normal operation mode. In this case, do the operation again from the start.

e. When registering to "2nd":

1. Using the LEXUS hand-held tester, select the registration mode,"2nd".

HINT: If the operation of step e. does not complete within 5 min., it will return to the normal operation mode. Also, if the number of the registered ID is less than 4 after 5 min. has elapsed, turning on the ignition switch will make the tire pressure warning light light up for 3 sec., go out for 0.5 sec., then up again and remain ON in the normal operation mode. In this case, do the operation again from the start.

f. Using the LEXUS hand-held tester, check that the last 3 bits of the 4 registered ID codes are different each other.

g. Setting the inflation pressure of all tires to normal value completes the transmitter ID registration.

know, it's been addressed many times in different ways but I could not find a thread dedicated to Testing and Programming the TPMS sensors in our cars. I am pretty sure this applies to years 2002-2006...

i Am only going to show how to find the bad sensor for now and will show Programming when the new sensor arrives.

your techstream software, connect the OBDII connector to your car.

Once it detects your car

Select Tire Pressure Monitor from the menu.

had an error code for ID2

As you see, Techstream provides plenty of data from the TPMS sensor. Easy to read and diagnose. The low voltage and extremely high temp was the giveaway this was the bad sensor.

Looks Like it..!!! have you driven the car for about 30-40mins to see if the Computer Resets the TPMS sensors And were the Sensors Put Back in the same Original Positions.. If all else fails take it to the Dealership and have them Properly Tuned in to the Car..Third party garages i find always tell you will there be NO PROBLEM Just to get the Sale...But Do Try Driving it On A Short journey Just to see if that Solves the Problem.....!!!! Cheers..!!

Thanks all for your help.

Latest: I have spoken to somebody from the tyre dealership who has asked to meet me on Monday so he can check the wheels. He has a machine that can identify which wheel sensor is faulty and he will check to see if it was damaged during the tyre fitment. Hopefully, I can be with him when he does it. I will update after the visit.

I won't identify the dealership until next week when I know the result of the above.

Has anybody used the Toyota (Lexus) specialist in Meopham Kent or is there a specialist nearer Sittingbourne that anybody knows of?

Your Making Progress Alan..Possibly one or more of the sensors could have been damaged They are quite Delicate...If You Have to Replace them GET OEM Sensors and Definately not Alternative Brands Made in China.... Some People might Disagree And have not Experienced Problems.. But Others Have...!!!! I Suspect it is a Toyota garage you went to...!!!!

Hi Ron,

It is a tyre dealer I went to. I haven't tried the longer journey thing, The beeping is too annoying to drive any distance. However, over the weekend I might give it a go with some rock music up loud if it isn't raining.

Being an elderly driver,I have no time for such nonsense, and pricy nonsense at that. Seems like a costly ‘solution’ to a non-existent problem.  Do tyres really lose pressure enough to need a sensor?

Agree ..if the tyre fitter has damaged a sensor tell the manager it’s going to Lexus for a new one …..no cheap aftermarket crap !

I have just received a "how did we do" email from the company that fitted the tyres. I will wait a while before I complete it. So far I have to say the company are taking the situation seriously, but I will reserve judgement for now.

Some on-line sites recommend that you replace the valve parts (stem, valve, washer, seal, etc) not with tyre fitter's generic parts but with LEXUS OEM parts only.

They are easy to damage if not fitted by an experienced tyre guy.

Another possible problem is that the battery has died in the TPMS ☹️

IMG_9104.jpeg

It is possible that the Battery has died, especially as the car is old enough to vote, bit of a coincidence to happen when the tyre is being replaced though.

So does anyone know the Battery size used in these TPMS. As I'm also about to replace all 4 tyres it might be worthwhile getting the tyre fitters to renew them all. What do you guys think. Thanks

Generally speaking they're not replaceable but there's a thread somewhere here that details a member doing just that. Requires a special tabbed Battery and the epoxy needs to be dug out and then resealed.

ETA this is the Thread on here from Britprius (R.I.P.)

The other problem with old sensors is they get fragile with age and easily break when, I changed all mine on my 11 year old IS300h last year when I had new tyres and wheels refurbed the fitter said they might break when removing them. Although they shouldn’t remove them on just a tyre swap but they may still be damaged in the process.

Here a link to a YouTube video on replacing the Battery in a sensor.
