Recent purchase of a used Lexus NX

Hi

Hi recently purchased a used Lexus NX from a private seller. The car’s quite clean and only done 29k miles. Reg is 65.

I’ve just discovered today that the second fob might be fake as it doesn’t have the Lexus logo on the back and the 2 buttons on it are both depressed inwards. And the key itself is not cut. It’s a plain key. Very disappointed as the seller didn’t mention this. The other fob that works has the Lexus emblem on the back and 3 buttons but it doesn’t seem to have a key which pulls out.

I’m panicking about what else I might discover.

 Any words of advice?

There’s a reasonably common scam where a spare key is kept by a “seller” - and they then come and steal your new used car and take it back using that key!

My first priority would therefore be securing the vehicle - if you have a driveway, using another car to block it in etc.

A trip to the dealer for a service (it’ll activate a 1 year / 10k warranty) and getting any other keys removed from the security system in the car would seem to be on the cards. They can also order another key for you.

I assume you ran a HPI check on the car ahead of purchase? If not, do that now before spending another penny…

Thanks for replying.

Yes I did a HPI check and there were no issues. Didn't realize about the scam you mention. The guy's still in touch with me. I'm trying to register the car with the lexus link+ app but so far have been unable to. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly. I think I need to be inside the car with my phone as the app talks to the car's multimedia system. There's also another app called Lexus Reach.

The car's very recently been serviced at the main dealer in Sep so the 1 yr warranty is active I believe. I'll call Lexus up tomorrow and see what they can do for me key wise.

Cool. Thanks for pointing that out. Lexus Link+ it is then.

Tried contacting Lexus via the Chat function but that doesn't work. Ended up leaving a message for them on the portal.

I've just discovered the passenger side window can't be controlled from the driver's side. Hope that's covered by warranty.
